I seem to have a large supply of breastmilk and I am planning to donate milk since I make so much. I remember when DD was born, I had so much in the freezer, and she was still eating her full share, that I could never completely get through my freezer supply....until my supply diminished.
Is anyone else thinking of donating milk?
What about sanitizing bottles, parts, etc?
I donated milk with DS, pumped into those BM storage bags. I donated through "Eats on Feets" which is now "Human Milk 4 Human Babies" (although there is maybe still Eats on Feets?). Human Milk 4 Human Babies has a FB page that you can join and post when you have BM to donate, others who are in need can post (I am on the FB page that is local to my area).
This time, I will look into donating to a breast milk bank that opened in my city last year. Previously, the closest one was almost 1000km away, and I would have had to pay transport costs.
What I like about donating to the milk bank is that the milk will go to preemies and high risk babes in the NICU who really, really need breastmilk. The disadvantage is that you have to go for blood tests, etc. and have to have more to donate at a time. Public donations you just make a match and donate to a mom in need.
I also donated some to a friend of mine who needed a little "extra" for her son.
For sanitizing, I used an advent steam sanitizer thing that I received as a gift. It was really handy and I used it for teething toys, soothers, etc. too.
BM, thanks for the thoughts on the lids. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing something. I'll keep my eyes peeled for BPA free lids (those would be nice for other uses besides the BM, like actual canning!)
