From my experience (and everyone's body will determine how baby feels to them) a large portion of 'hard spot' while the rest is soft is when the baby rolls to facing in and what you're feeling is the back. I confirm this by using a fetoscope and hearing the HB very loud at the surface.
When I get lots of kicks all over my belly and my own belly button sucks in, the baby's back is resting towards my back and baby is facing out to the world.
Butt usually 'feels' very squishy and it's a larger part. Easier to find than the head most of the time.
Baby's head when pushed on will generally not move much. It may 'float up' but then fall back down in the same place.
Knees/elbows/feet.... when pushed on will go everywhere. Them you can chase all over till the cows come home!
My husband says it's like playing a very GENTLE version of whack a mole cause you never know where it's going to pop up next
