Hi everyone - we adopted a wonderful 1.5 year old dog a few weeks ago and got a new (2010) Subaru Forester at around the same time. All has been going well until today when I left Percy (dog) in the car while DS2 and I got out to pick up DS1 from nursery school. A few minutes later we came back to find the top tether to DS2's seat chewed right through and just hanging from the ceiling!
Here are the specs: we have 2 Radian XTs, both forward facing and outboard. The top tether connects to hooks in the ceiling. There are no floor anchors for FF seats so that isn't an option. We have a very good dog barrier (sturdy steel grill with small holes so nothing can fly forward) that the tethers fit perfectly through without being obstructed. I can get VERY good installs with these seats in the Forester. I'm thrilled at how rock solid they are before attaching the tether, but have always used the tether because it is recommended. I understand however that it is not required.
Percy is excited in the car and a bit anxious when we leave him but I hope that will get better over time. I want to be able to leave him in the car unattended occasionally (only when weather permits of course). I know that making sure that he gets lots of exercise before being left and providing him with safe things to chew will help and I try to do that already. He's not much of a chewer at home so maybe today was a fluke. But I need more reassurance than that!
- order a replacement tether, use some kind of bitter tasting spray on them and hope that it doesn't happen again
- stop using the tethers and not worry about it, I have A+ installs and they are optional anyway
- crate the dog in the car
- something else?
Thanks for your help! I'm curious to know if this has happened to anyone else.
