Spotlight Thread - Page 9

1.  Where did you grow up?

Right here in Seattle. In and around the Puget Sound, basically.

2.  What is your favorite place you've lived and why?

I really like the Eastside. We lived in Kirkland for a few years, but I'd like to live in Redmond.

3.  What is your education in (degrees, certifications, skill training, etc.)?

I am trained as a massage therapist. I took a year long 1,000 hour intensive course in downtown Seattle and graduated five years ago.

4.  What is the last job you held prior to becoming a mother?

I was a massage therapist! ;) I worked at a day spa in Bellevue and I *loved* it! Great pay, fun clients (no one's ever angry or stressed when they see you!) and relaxing atmosphere.

5.  If you work now, what do you do specifically?  If you stay at home, what are a few things you do every week with the kids and around the house?

I have an Etsy shop, but it's super, super part time. Like, one or two sales a month, if that. Other than that I'm a SAHM. R and I don't do much outside of the house because he's gotten really cranky about the car suddenly, and tends to get tantrummy away from home. We play outside, mostly. If it's raining we play inside. Or do laundry. It's not very exciting!

6.  Do you consider yourself religious, spiritual, philosophical, etc.?  If so, how would you describe your beliefs and/or traditions?

I grew up in a Christian home, but I decided that wasn't for me when I was in high school. I've done a lot of research into other religions, but ultimately I've come to the conclusion that I'm just not religious. I would say I'm spiritual, but I don't know how to describe it. I really don't believe there's any 'higher power' of any kind. I just believe in the energies of people and things and how we are all connected. In true hippy fashion ;)

7.  List two things you know a lot about:

Nutrition (but probably not as much as Abra!!) and crafting.

8.  List three things you love to do:

Crafting (knitting, sewing, etc), reading/researching, and be outside.

9.  Do you currently adhere to a special kind of diet?  If so, what and why?

We are basically on full GAPS. Mostly because Rhyko was born premature and was on antibiotics from birth and had really, really bad reflux as an infant (among other 'GAPS baby' symptoms) and to help my moods/depression.

10.  What is your favorite form of exercise?

Walking, hiking, swimming. I abhor exercise for the sake of 'working out'. I used to make myself work out for hours each day even though I hated it and I've hated it that much more ever since then.

11.  If you could change anything about your current life, what would it be?

That I could be free of depression/anxiety.

12.  Name one goal for this summer:

To successfully grow a vegetable garden!

13.  If you could magically have all the training and skills necessary for a different profession, what would you want to do & why?

I'd love to be a doula and lactation consultant. I think it would be too much stress for me to be a midwife, but I'd enjoy being a doula, I think. Both birth and post-partum.

14.  Name one thing on your bucket list:

Travel the world! I want to see Europe, India, and Australia specifically.

15.  Do you have a random talent?  Explain:

Hmmm... Internet sleuthing? I'm pretty good at that... I can't think of anything else!

16.  Describe two family traditions you practice (these could be daily, weekly, monthly, or annually):

We always do our grocery shop on Saturday morning and it's a nice little family tradition. I'm looking forward to next month when the farmer's market starts. We went every Saturday last year and it was such a lovely thing to do each week!

We also go camping with my whole family each year to Eastern Washington (Ephrata). We picked the camp ground when I was 18 months old and we've gone every year, since. We missed one year when I was 19 and we will be missing this year, but other than that we've gone. We rent out a whole section of the place and our group is usually about 30-50 people. It's great fun!

17.  What color makes you feel good and why?

Green. Love it. It's calming and grounding.

18.  Assign 2 adjectives (positive or negative!) to each of your children, your partner, and the 2 most common adjectives you hear about yourself from others:

Me: Emotional, Stubborn

DH: Patient, hard-working

R: Loving, cranky

19.  Name a book, movie, song, or other piece of art that really speaks to you and tell us why:

I really like John William Waterhouse; specifically The Lady of Shalott. It's hauntingly gorgeous and mysterious, makes you really think and try to come up with the story behind the 'picture'.

Also Jesca Hoop's song, "The Kingdom"

20.  Describe the meal/recipe that you eat most frequently and why you eat it so frequently:

We eat Taco Bowls a lot... It's GAPS legal and easy! We have them for lunch almost every day...! I really like them, though. I love Mexican food. And Indian.

Where have you traveled?  Favorite places?  Anywhere in particular in Europe?   Why these places?  I LOVE travel!

Internet sleuthing!  What do you search for?  Favorite topics?

Oh, see I think something totally different when I hear Internet sleuthing... Like, do we need to be worried?? Do you knows ssn?? Lol!

What's in your taco bowls? Do you cook Indian? What dishes? I love cooking Indian food. I spent three years reading everything I could and teaching myself to cook it. smile.gif

This is why I love this thread... we've been talking daily for pretty much 2 years now and I totally didn't know you were a massage therapist!  What kind of massage did you specialize in?

Yes, taco bowls and Indian... do share!

Where in Australia would you visit if you could plan your dream vacation there?

Share your recipes with us!!  I would love to hear some of your favorites,

When I first read the spotlight, I thought you said, "Taco Bell".  I walked around the house thinking how odd it was that you loved Taco Bell after reading about your thoughts on diet, nutrition, grass-fed, etc., etc.  Then, I re-read it when I wrote my own post, and realized you had said "Taco BOWLS".  The world makes sense again.

I've only been to Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas/Caribbean. I'd love to visit almost everywhere in Europe! I want to see the UK, France, Italy, Greece, Germany, Norway, etc... I want to see it all! I just love reading about the culture of those places and I get all 'spiritual' (see above religion comment!) when I'm immersed in some serious culture! ;) I have friends in a lot of European countries, so I'd love to visit them.

I think I'm good at sleuthing stuff people are searching for with very few clues... Like, an example is that my mom had this favorite kids book she read as a child, but she didn't remember what it was called. It had 'a dog who went to the beach' and that's all she could give me. I found the book through some internet searching. I also used to be a Paralegal and you need to have a really good sense of searching to find cases and court files that can help your attorney's case. This sort of thing gets easier and easier to do every day as the internet expands, though!

No, I'm not a hacker! winky.gif Just like researching. Always have! I used to do a silent 'YES!' when my teachers in school assigned research papers because I really loved that. I really like anthropology, too.

My taco bowls are super easy! They are: grass-fed ground beef (3 pounds, so that we have left overs) with home-made taco seasoning, avocado, olives, salsa, navy beans, raw cheese, sour cream and some fresh cilantro if we have any! Easy.

I like to make butter chicken or tika masala. I have yet to perfect the butter chicken... it either comes out too tomatoey or not enough. I like saag paneer, too!! Yum.

I did all kinds at the spa! It was owned by a husband and wife team - she did the spa and he was a chiropractor. So for him I did injury treatment and insurance work, and for her I did body treatments (scrubs, wraps, etc) and general spa massage (swedish, deep tissue, etc). I loved it all!

See above for taco bowls! ;)

I have no idea about Australia travel, I just know I want to go there. I have a friend who lives in Australia I could stay with, and she lives outside Sydney.

I mostly just find recipes on Pinterest! I have an awesome one for flourless brownies, though.... I could share that! And fail-proof roasted chicken! That's ALWAYS yummy! I'll get the recipes and post them in our recipe thread.

Ha! Yeah, I ate my fair share of Taco Bell in high school! There was one down the street from my school and my BFF and I had half days on Fridays for our last semester, so we made it our goal to try everything on the menu at least once. We did it, of course. winky.gif I think I've had Taco Bell like once or twice since then and... it was soooo not appealing! Haha.

Don't often get a chance to post, but this is a great thread-everyone is so interesting.

I'm a fan of Waterhouse as well. I framed several pages from a Waterhouse calendar.

Would you mind sharing your Etsy shop, or telling us what you sell there?

Yes of course! It is inthepinetree.etsy.com

Cute stuff Christina!  If I had a sewing machine I would totally try to make some upcycled baby pants!

Do you ever plan on working again?

Thank you! I like making those pants... I make them with DH's old long sleeved tshirts, too, for pjs or warmer weather.

Once Rhyko is much, much older I would like to do some doula and LC stuff and maybe get back into massage. In like 15 years.

Hmm... can't say I ever have! I mean, I guess 'near' can be a relative term. There are plenty of rock slide areas on the roads going into the mountains, but I don't think any of the campgrounds I've been in have had slides specifically.

OOOH!!! I get it. Like water slides. I was thinking rock slides.

YES! We camp at Denny Creek almost every year (it's so darn close) and I've gone on those slides a lot! Worn out many a butt of my shorts doing that! ;)

Haha, I realized that when you replied.

Are you getting enough crafty time these days?
No, not as much as I would like. But I am more okay with that, now.

It's a nice park. There is also a short hike to a waterfall with a pool at the bottom that is great in hot weather!
