1.  Where did you grow up?

Midwest

2.  What is your favorite place you've lived and why?

My favorite place is where we live right now.

3.  What is your education in (degrees, certifications, skill training, etc.)?

A.A.S. Accounting

4.  What is the last job you held prior to becoming a mother?

I was a staff accountant.

5.  If you work now, what do you do specifically?

I am a mutual fund accountant.

6.  Do you consider yourself religious, spiritual, philosophical, etc.?  If so, how would you describe your beliefs and/or traditions?

I currently consider myself spiritual, not sure on the religious part.

7.  List two things you know a lot about:

Birds. Western medicine.

8.  List three things you love to do:

Work with numbers/math. Cook. Snuggle with my little girl.

9.  Do you currently adhere to a special kind of diet?  If so, what and why?

Yes, I avoid cow dairy, gluten, sugar, soy, food dyes, and generally try to include GAPS foods into my diet, though I'm not yet on a full GAPS regimen.

10.  What is your favorite form of exercise?

Dancing!

11.  If you could change anything about your current life, what would it be?

12.  Name one goal for this summer:

Get into a habit of taking daily walks outside.

13.  If you could magically have all the training and skills necessary for a different profession, what would you want to do & why?

I always wanted to work in a medical/health-type profession, but I never had the confidence to pursue it. So, I'd want to be a midwife! I love births and babies and all of that stuff.

14.  Name one thing on your bucket list:

Is it sad that I don't have a bucket list?

15.  Do you have a random talent?  Explain:

I can't think of anything off of the top of my head other than something totally random that's not exactly a talent... I can hide my tics while in public [meaning, I prevent them from being visible]. I have Tourette's syndrome but nobody knows except the people closest to me (and now you!).

16.  Describe two family traditions you practice (these could be daily, weekly, monthly, or annually):

Hmm, I have no idea... We really need to get moving on traditions. We suck.

17.  What color makes you feel good and why?

Green! Always been my favorite. Just because.

18.  Assign 2 adjectives (positive or negative!) to each of your children, your partner, and the 2 most common adjectives you hear about yourself from others:

DD: expressive, old soul

DH: laid back, intelligent

Me: sensitive, perfectionist

19.  Name a book, movie, song, or other piece of art that really speaks to you and tell us why:

My favorite movie is Legends of the Fall. It just gets me every time. I'll be in a puddle of tears and begging for more. It's just that moving. Great story, amazing actors, beautiful music... probably my favorite theme song of all time.

20.  Describe the meal/recipe that you eat most frequently and why you eat it so frequently:

Spaghetti and meat sauce

Joanie, I love that you live in your favorite place and that you don't really have a bucket list because you've already accomplished the major things you wanted for your life! That's really great!

What is your bird knowledge about? Like bird watching? Do you have lots of feeders and bird houses in your yard? We just had our first hummingbird of the year the other day, I was so excited! They really like my catmint.

Are you and your DH planning to have another baby? I can't remember.

What do you like to do in your free time? Like, say you had two hours by yourself - what would you do?

And, can I just say... we could forge the new 'The Farm' with just our DDC alone! The vast number of us interested in being midwives/doulas  AND living sustainably/off-grid is mind boggling!

I know, right?

Joanie, I want to know more about your bird knowledge as well.  I've always enjoyed going on early morning bird walks (complete with notebook, bird ID book, and binoculars).  I got to know the birds of western Washington and southern Arizona pretty well, but I haven't delved into birding much in the other states we've been to yet.  Kids get in the way of early morning bird walks...

I know!  My DH is super interested in living off the grid.  If we had enough money, we would buy a piece of land, and live off the grid/sustainably...

Joanie, do you use homemade meat sauce?  And do you have a recipe?  I am so tired of the stuff I buy since it isn't very good and always hurts my tummy (even the organic kind).

I consider myself to have a good general bird knowledge base, but most of my knowledge centers around parrots (even more specifically, lovebirds!). When I moved into my first apartment at 18, I wanted a pet and came across the most beautiful picture of a creamino lovebird (look it up!). I loved it so much that I went out and bought one. Then I learned all about the intelligence and genetics of lovebirds, and I was hooked. There are so many genetic pairings you can specifically try for to produce certain colors of lovebirds. I started going to bird shows all around the region and bought a male lovebird to hopefully mate with my female, even built my own nestbox. She laid some eggs but they didn't hatch. I ended up with 5 lovebirds at one time several years down the road, and then due to circumstances beyond my control I had to give them away. greensad.gif (Parrots really bond to their owners, they are literally like children in mental capacity, so it breaks my heart when they don't get lasting homes...) Long story short, I still look to birds as something that excites me, calms me, puts a smile on my face every time I see and hear them. I love when the cardinals are chirping outside of my window. I know they're there before I see them. Early mornings are my favorite with the birds! If I ever find the time, I'd like to do bird watching as a hobby. One of my favorite pasttimes is going to pet stores and bird shows just to watch the birds... I really love them that much! (And, well, I'll go to any pet store just to see animals in general. They cheer me up!)

As for meat sauce, I buy my sauce already jarred, but I have made a really yummy roasted tomato sauce before that I'll try to look up. Boy was that a lot of work, though!

Sonja, have you heard about the no impact man book/project? It's about sustainable living in a major city.

Joanie, if you were going to be stranded on a desert island for a month and food and shelter were plentiful, what 3 things would you want to have with you?
No I haven't Sara, thanks... I will take a look.

Joanie, I had two lovebirds for a while while I was growing up... Someone stole them though greensad.gif the are beautiful birds. My parents are avid birders back home. I love seeing different birds about...reminds me of my mom!

Oh, I loved the movie!  The parts that focused on the backlash he received were particularly fascinating to me.  Wow.

Joanie, how long have you played the piano?  What are your favorite things to play?

There's a movie?

yes, called "no impact man"

It's a good movie, but I felt sorry for his wife! Last time I checked it was streaming on Netflix.
I had the same feeling about the wife just reading the blog. I'll have to check out the very logically titled movie. I only brought it all up because its hard to see living in the country as sustainable if you have to use so much gas to go to town.

Joanie- I find Tourette's to be very interesting. I studied it a bit. Thank you for sharing that part of your life with us! Did you struggle with it more when you were younger?

1.  Where did you grow up?

Nacogdoches, TX (Small town East Texas) in an old house with no heat/ac. It was pretty hot in the summers! :)

2.  What is your favorite place you've lived and why?

My hometown was nice, I do love where we live now too: Lindale, TX (another small town East TX), but I'd have to say the one year I lived in a bus touring the US with a youth ministry.

3.  What is your education in (degrees, certifications, skill training, etc.)?

I have an associate of science in Film Production and I am also a certified birth/postpartum doula through Childbirth International.

4.  What is the last job you held prior to becoming a mother?

Working at Starbucks and being a promotional model.

5.  If you work now, what do you do specifically?  If you stay at home, what are a few things you do every week with the kids and around the house?

I am a birth doula & birth photographer, so every few weeks I'm called out in the middle of the night to go help mamas have babies. Plus all the prenatal/postpartum meetings. I also stay at home with the three kiddos, homeschooling them! So my day is anything from teaching math to cooking to cleaning to birth to photo editing! I need a lot of patience and a large dose of God's grace!

6.  Do you consider yourself religious, spiritual, philosophical, etc.?  If so, how would you describe your beliefs and/or traditions?

I am a follower of Jesus, so I try my best to live like He does. My motto is "Love God, Love People". :) I was raised quite different from Christianity, but found my way there in high school.

7.  List two things you know a lot about:

Birth  and Lord of the Rings (lol, huge Tolkien fan!)

8.  List three things you love to do:

1. Read, Read Read, 2. Be out in nature, relaxing 3. Sing

9.  Do you currently adhere to a special kind of diet?  If so, what and why?

I am a vegetarian, just because I was raised that way since birth! Funnily, I have tried all sorts of weird meats like zebra and kudu in Africa.

10.  What is your favorite form of exercise?

Currently doing exercise DVDs in my own because of the convenience!

11.  If you could change anything about your current life, what would it be?

Really just my own attitude about things, know what I mean? If I had endless patience and contentment despite circumstances, everything would be great! ;)

12.  Name one goal for this summer:

Find a way to pay for a midwife.

13.  If you could magically have all the training and skills necessary for a different profession, what would you want to do & why?

I love my work, but I'd add writing books to the list- someday, when the kids are much older or grown!

14.  Name one thing on your bucket list:

Go to New Zealand!!!

15.  Do you have a random talent?  Explain:

Eek.. I have no idea! Sorry y'all!

16.  Describe two family traditions you practice (these could be daily, weekly, monthly, or annually):

I like to write letters to my kids on their birthdays - just telling them how much I loved seeing them grow the past year and blessing them. Often (not sure about consistency) we like to play the What I Love About ___ game where we bless each member of our family with our words.

17.  What color makes you feel good and why?

Blues, love how peaceful the are.

18.  Assign 2 adjectives (positive or negative!) to each of your children, your partner, and the 2 most common adjectives you hear about yourself from others:

Tor (almost 6): Insatiable Hunger to Learn; Communicative

Zion (3): Sweetly Spirited; Determined

Enoch (16 months): Cuddly; Jokester

DH: Techie; Demonstative

Myself: Truthful; Bookworm

19.  Name a book, movie, song, or other piece of art that really speaks to you and tell us why:

I love the Lord of the Rings series. Its hard to describe why they mean so much to me. I can lose myself in those books, each time I read them they reflect a more carefree time in my Life somehow.

20.  Describe the meal/recipe that you eat most frequently and why you eat it so frequently:

Black Bean Tacos. Easy and delicious!

My DH loves Lord of the Rings - I had never seen them until I married my DH, we watched them back to back in our first year of marriage!  Talking of which, how long have you been married and where did you meet your DH?
