I loved reading all about you, Abra! I find you fascinating. flowersforyou.gif

Awe, thanks Christina.  love.gif

What in your pre-mom or early mom life lead you to going the natural route?

My mom was an attachment parent before attachment parenting had a name.  She co-slept, breastfed and home-birthed myself and most of my siblings.  She's also always been interested in healing and healthy diets.  We have pretty much tried them all over the years.  Having a natural homebirth, breastfeeding and eating well are just what you do in my family..

How did you and George meet?

We met on Match.com.  It was on of those stories where I was really fed up with dating and was going to take a long break after this date with George.  I really didn't even bother to talk to him at all before we met.  He happened to live just a few blocks from me in Downtown Portland, we hit it off and it's been history every since!  He's pretty much my polar opposite, we balance each other out in a lot of ways.

What is your favorite food (and it doesn't have to be GAPS legal!! Haha)?

Sushi!  I had my first GAPS cheat last weekend and took myself and kids out (when George was out of town).  Mmmm.

Wow, that's so cool that you grew up in an attachment family.

I met my dh on match.com, too!

Oh, man... I loooooove sushi, too. We used to live in Seattle proper and we ate a LOT of sushi!

Ahh!  Thank you Jaimee.  I will answer later today when B takes her nap :)

1.  Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the Bay Area.  Mostly in Napa.  We moved to WA when I was 13.

2.  What is your favorite place you've lived and why?

Hands down the Northwest!  With my ex husband we traveled around a bit (East Coast, Texas), and I have never loved a place like I love WA.  The trees are green, the rain is great, the climate is perfect, and the people are liberal enough.  There is a progressive lifestyle here that they don't have in a lot of other placesFor the most part, people here are the only people who didn't treat me like a nut job for some of my beliefs.

3.  What is your education in (degrees, certifications, skill training, etc.)?

I got my BSN when I was 21.  I took some further psychology and sciences, but failed terribly at juggling 2 kids and an education.

4.  What is the last job you held prior to becoming a mother?

I worked as a floater nurse for a network of local hospitals, doing mostly emergency work.  I quit mid-way through my pregnancy with my older daughter.  I absolutely love emergency work, though. I love blood and guts and gore and amputation and other things most people find traumatizing.  Trauma was always my favorite.

5.  If you work now, what do you do specifically?  If you stay at home, what are a few things you do every week with the kids and around the house?

I stay at home.  I have absolutely no balance in my life at all, and I cant think of a single we consistently do around the house.

6.  Do you consider yourself religious, spiritual, philosophical, etc.?  If so, how would you describe your beliefs and/or traditions?

I consider myself a believer in God, but not a believer in conventional religion. I don't see God as some dude hanging out in heaven being almighty and dictating our lives.  But, more as a presence and a creator.  I think all religions have the same core, and worship the same being, and we all just have different names for it/them/him/her/whatever.  In my studies, I found that all religions have similar stories of creation and similar stories their belief system is founded on.  I just cant believe that its a coincidence.

7.  List two things you know a lot about:

Children and crafting.

8.  List three things you love to do:

I love to craft- knitting, sewing, painting.  I love to remodel.  And I love getting in over my head on projects and having to use my brain to get out of it.

9.  Do you currently adhere to a special kind of diet?  If so, what and why?

Nothing more than peanut/tree nut free, which I do because I am nursing B and she is allergic.  I eat mostly vegetables and grains.  Not a fan of dairy or meat.

10.  What is your favorite form of exercise?

I prefer intense cardio, but I also enjoy yoga.  I passionately hate running.

11.  If you could change anything about your current life, what would it be?

We would be more self-sustained.  We moved to a suburban area from a small farmhouse before B was born.  We had good reasons, but I miss getting my own eggs and milk and growing my own vegetables and apples and berries.  We have a long term plan that involves a large amount of property and being off the grid mostly...but this stepping stone on our way there is a rough one.

12.  Name one goal for this summer:

I want to see more of WA.  I want to go to the Hoh Rainforest.

13.  If you could magically have all the training and skills necessary for a different profession, what would you want to do & why?

I would farm my own grains.  That probably sounds like a crazy person thing, but Im very against GMO's and Im tired of worrying and researching my food before I buy it.

14.  Name one thing on your bucket list:

Travel to Europe.  I always intended on it after my first year of college, but I got pregnant in high school instead.

15.  Do you have a random talent?  Explain:

I can talk people down and diffuse pretty much any situation solely with words and no threats.

16.  Describe two family traditions you practice (these could be daily, weekly, monthly, or annually):

Every summer we take the kids to these shady looking run down cabins on the beach.  There is no cell service, and no distractions, and its awesome.  We also celebrate the crap out of our kids birthdays.  We always go big.

17.  What color makes you feel good and why?

I have no idea.  I love bright colors and chaos, though.

18.  Assign 2 adjectives (positive or negative!) to each of your children, your partner, and the 2 most common adjectives you hear about yourself from others:

Phoenix:  hysterical, strong

Grace:  sensitive, genious

Bettie:  intense, clingy

Alex (DH):  resourceful, emotional

Me:  Sarcastic, honest

19.  Name a book, movie, song, or other piece of art that really speaks to you and tell us why

I attach the song Everlong by the Foo Fighters to a particular time in my life when I was really taking back who I was and putting myself on the right path.

20.  Describe the meal/recipe that you eat most frequently and why you eat it so frequently

I have a cake problem.  Just throwing it out there.  Like, I love cake.  Intensely.  Like, if I had to choose between a good cake and my dog...I would totally choose the cake.

Hahahahaha, love the cake/dog thing! It made me laugh .... Thanks!

I'm not gonna lie, I don't really like the dog that much.  Lol.

Haha, Ash! I love it. Your two words to describe yourself totally fit your answers to this! lol.gif

Tell me more about your desires to live off grid! Where would you want your land? Would you have animals? Or just crops?

What kinds of things do you like to knit/sew?

Why'd you move to the suburban area?

There were a lot of factors.  We were living in a 2 bedroom, 600 sq ft house and we wanted more space.  But we also knew that buying something nice after the market tanked would turn us a profit in the long run because we love to renovate and know how to do it on the cheap (like, tiling a whole kitchen counter for $10 cheap) and nice.  Our house now is three times the house but with no land.  We figure, only 3-4 more years here until we buy property and start to build.

I can talk about my dream house ALL day lol.

There is a small town I lived in growing up after we moved to WA.  Close enough to stores/hospitals/businesses but far enough away that you are undisturbed.  Its my favorite place!  We plan on buying about 10 acres there.  We want chickens, goats, cows, and some bison for food.  I want sheep for wool to spin yarn.  And my husband has done a ton of research on installing solar panels and using the lovely natural NW water supply to keep our house sustained water wise.

I can knit and sew nearly anything.  I have knitted jackets, blankets, sewed quilts.  My new favorite is making and selling reusable sandwich bags.  Its easy and fun and reduces waste.

And I totally didn't know you wanted to live off the grid... see, I learned something new about you!  We all really would make a great village...

I am so not interesting. In fact I feel like I couldn't possibly be more boring. Haha.

My weakness is cake. For sure. I have 70 cupcakes in my fridge right now and it's killing me.

I taught myself to craft. I used to make my own clothes and bags in high school, then about 5 years ago I learned to knit from watching YouTube videos :P. My husband bought me a killer embroidery machine for Christmas and there is no stopping me now...for 2 weeks I embroidered All. The. Things. All of them.

Nicole you would be surprised at how fast a city girl can learn to milk a goat! Lol.

I taught myself to knit 5 years ago on youtube as well!  Aww!  crochetsmilie.gif So fun.  I have fallen in LOVE with embroidery too.  What do you embroider?  I do hand embroidery.  Do you have a certain site or style of pattern that you like?  Alicia Paulsen has such beautiful stuff, and I love urban threads and sublime stitching, too!

Yep, Abra and Ash just set the bar high for the rest of us as far as interestingness goes... winky.gif You gals are great!

I seriously want to visit the PNW. Right now. Is there anyone who doesn't just absolutely love it there? *hopping on plane*

Ash, do you enjoy cake/cupcake decorating too? I bet your children have the best birthday cakes around! thumb.gif

It's amazing (or maybe not) how many of us want to live off of the grid.  We have also done a ton of research over the years about this.  What kind of house do you want to build Ash?  Any alternative building materials?

Joanie, I'm pretty sure that everyone who can tolerate 9 months of rain loves the PNW.  ;)

Ohhhh, love Sublime Stitching!!!!!  And I love to embroider.  I  made the sweetest hair clips and hair ties for DD by embroidering wool felt.  So sweet.  All my friends prefer knitting and sewing, and find embroidery too fussy, but I don't care!!!  Sooooo glad you're back, J!!!!!!!

Ash, do you like baking, decorating, or eating cake (or all/any of the above)?  I am obsessed with the Miette cookbook and have now made almost all the cakes.  Here is a pic of DD's birthday cake i made...yum!
