I'm guessing you all have seen this one?http://www.thehealthyhomeeconomist.com/baby-breastfed-by-vegan-mother-dies/
I'm completely and utterly disgusted by this. Like she's the authority on breastfeeding or something? Clearly, she knows nothing about human lactation and must have had a horrible time with breastfeeding, which really sucks. I'd blame the support she was given, because women just don't get enough. I had NO idea the WPF was somewhat anti-breastfeeding and am glad I found out now, I almost joined the darn foundation. I don't think I will now after reading their stance on things. It's just another way to make woman feel like they CANNOT possible feed their child from their own bodies. How, exactly, would COWS milk, raw or pus-filled and pasteurized ever be a substitute for breastmilk meant for HUMAN babies? Excuse my over-usage of caps but I'm so angered by this.
I've read and watched MANY of Sarah Popes' blog posts/videos about traditional food. I always though she was a little... well... cray cray. But she's got some great things on that site. Sadly, I think I'll be boycotting her for awhile.
This for some reason makes me recall a very interesting documentary that my husband and I watched about the Dustbowl era in America (1930s). We learned about how badly these poor people ate. Yes, and their kids did too. An egg a day, if they were lucky. One woman said she remembered eating grains/dirt most days, so somewhat close to a vegan diet even. Pretty sure they didn't feed their babies formula, but I could be wrong. From what I read, the moms' body would take the beating in the situation, and would prioritize to make sufficient milk for the infant, during this kind of famine. Then there is that famous photograph of that woman breastfeeding, at least I think she is. She's clearly starving and malnourished. You'd think because of bad diet, she wouldn't produce ANY milk! Not how human lactation works. It's genius! Now I'm blathering... I currently BF a 3yo and will probably tandem baby #2 that I've been cooking for 14 weeks so I care very deeply about this. It's not just emotional bonding either. How insulting to read that this Pope chick thinks that. Ugh!.Edited by tillymonster - 4/2/13 at 11:48pm
