Talked to DH yesterday, and we are starting to lean towards setting an appt with my local OB/GYN soon, like in the next couple weeks. So if I start to have real problems (we are reaching the point where I m/c'd last time), my doc won't be caught totally by surprise. If all goes well, I will transfer my care in time to have my 20 wk ultrasound with the practice that will support me throughout my VBAC.
Fortunately, I have 2 good options (even if they are only 2 hours away). I still need to call the hospitals and check their policies regarding have children in labor and delivery, since I will want my 4 yr old to be able to be there. Another big issue will be giving birth during flu season -- I imagine this will have an effect on policy. I will do some checking on local forums, but i think both hospitals are known to have nurses that "overlook" policy.
I am leaning towards a midwifery practice that has an awesome back-up OB. He is a big supporter of VBACs, and of course, he hopefully will not need to be there for the birth...but for the me the clincher is that he is a proponent of family-centered cesareans. So if I do end up needing a cesarean birth again, and as long as it is not a major, knock-me-out emergency, I can find comfort knowing that everything will go as I would want it. I will not have to fight for automatic skin-on-skin contact. I will not have to fight to keep my baby with me. Knowing that will really ease my mind as I prepare for the birth.
Oh, yes, and I can have a VBAC water birth there. Woo-hoo! I am not sure if I will want to birth in the water, but just knowing I can labor in the pool or in a hot shower, is really, really exciting to me.
