tic or something else?

Hey everyone...

I'm not on here often, but was hoping for some thoughts. My son has had some weird (excessive/fast/hard) blinking on and off for going on a year. Up until recently we just figured it was a tic and didn't worry much about it. Then this past weekend he was doing it almost constantly from Friday until Monday. It was about 72 hours, give or take a few hours. Anyway, on Monday he complained of a headache and fell asleep for 2 hours on the sofa, which he never naps. I tried waking him up a few times but he'd just mumble something and go back to sleep. After about 2 hours, he woke up and it was like nothing ever happened. He didn't have a headache and wasn't blinking weird anymore. We've seen a little of the blinking since then, but minor.

Basically, I'm just wondering if this was your kid, would you be concerned or does it sound like just a tic?

I do have a video I made for his developmental pediatrician (he has an appointment in a few days) but I'm not really comfortable sharing publicly, if it would help, I can PM a link to a couple people.

I would be concerned with that duration and frequency, paired with the headache and nap afterwards. I know lots of people do have blinking as a tic, or related to allergies... but it can also be related to seizures, strokes, and other more serious conditions so I would definitely want it checked out medically after what you observed. Hopefully everything else will be ruled out and it will "just" be a tic.

This was exactly what I was going to say.  I'd definitely bring it to the attention on your doctor and get a refferal to a neurologist just to cover all your bases.

It sounds very seizure like to me, possible a movement disorder.  The only way to tell for sure is an EEG (during the episode).  I would go get the referral to pedi Neuro, your pediatrician might be able to order an EEG as well.  You definitely need to follow up.
