Hi! DH, our 3 young boys and my teenage SIL are looking for a fun city to move to! We'd like a place that has parks, is easy to travel by bus or foot. JOBS would be nice, too!
We have already lived in the GTA, Guelph, Kitchener & Bancroft. Looking for something new this fall!
Sell your city to me! We are open to just about anywhere!

Welcome to the thread! Where are you currently? We moved from Kitchener in November, we are in Bancroft right now, staying with / camping on my in laws property. We have learned it's COLD winter camping so we'll continue camping til the fall and then try out a new city.

We have been considering Ottawa, for no other reason than "Why not?" I hope more people reply to this thread smile.gif

We're in Toronto now... Toronto is a great place to live, I really like it but it's disgustingly overpriced.

Ottawa sounds really good to me too... the property prices are pretty affordable/reasonable for what you get.

Oakville would be another choice, great schools, great people but also really expensive.

We thought about Windsor, really low property prices right now, but that's due to not much work, but we could just hop the border and live really inexpensively.

Oshawa isn't bad, lots of new homes and a few years ago it was awarded some title such as "Canada's fastest growing city" or something... I can't really remember.

We live in Washington but we had a condo in Burlington, ON. I love it! My husband grew up there. Of course it's expensive by the water but there are other areas that are nice that are more affordable. Good luck!

I grew up in Sault Ste. Marie.  I would not suggest moving there.

Ottawa on the other hand is awesome.  We lived downtown there last year - lots to do and see.  Great bus system.

Do you need a place with certain types of employment?  Do you speak French?

AVOID OSHAWA!!! I'm in a suburb outside of Oshawa. Besides a wicked music scene Oshawa really has NOTHING to offer. Don't bother.

I REALLY LOVE OTTAWA. Our house is up for sale and if we stay in Ontario my vote is Ottawa valley area. Downtown if you want "city" I love it there!!!!

LOL it's not THAT bad... and it has suburbs now? ROTFLMAO.gif

I grew up there and still have lots of friends there so that would be my only real reason to move there... it's pretty much a "get what you pay for" kind of place... you can buy a huge brand new house for next to nothing and still be a workable commute away from the city.

Not looking for any jobs in particular. SIL is thinking restaurant or retail, I am flirting with doula-ing again.

I do speak french smile.gif It's rusty but I think with some practice I would be fine. DH can understand it and I am not sure about my SIL. My oldest SIL (their sister) lives in Quebec, Ottawa would be close enough to visit often!

If you like Ottawa, you might like it just across the border on the Quebec side... their real estate prices are SUPER affordable!

Also, SIL wants ro be far away enough from Bancroft so her parents can't drop in, lol! (So no Peterborough, Belleville...)

We'll be renting, we get bored and like to relocate. In 10 years the longest we've stayed anywhere was 2 years.

I think Quebec would be fun but we are unschoolers and I know homeschooling there is very strict.

Could you maybe use someone else's address? Like have your SIL pay the rent and you guys are just "visiting"? If you work on the Ontario side, I don't think anyone would question it... and if your kids don't speak French, they'll learn super quick!

I agree with the Ottawa area for unschooling. The kids would pick up French super quick. You could prob even hire a tutor for dirt cheap that teaches them how you'd feel comfortable. I have family that lives in Montreal and they LOVE it. Only downfall is the train into the Lindsay/Oshawa area is DISGUSTINGLY expensive. My ds has been dying to take the VIA to visit them..honestly we can't afford it. It would cost less then half to drive and at least 2h quickereyesroll.gif

Have you ever thought of sending him on a Porter flight? They're awesome! 70 minutes from the Toronto Island Airport, you can do a round trip for under $250 (taxes included!!) and the "airport" is SUPER easy to navigate... all the commercials are true, it really is the best way to travel.

We are now seriously considering moving to Quebec! Need to figure out the homeschooling stuff. We want to remain Ontario residents...have a lot of research to do!
