Question: What to expect at Dr. appt?

My first "real" dr. appt is next week. I had an appt a few weeks back due to bleeding. They did an u/s and we saw a little baby (6weeks) and a h/b. I don't think they could measure the h/b because the baby was too small at that point. I will be 9 weeks at my appt. Do you think they will try to hear the h/b or do another u/s? I just curious as to what I should expect...

Edited to add: With my pg with Adam I had an appt at 5 weeks (very quick appt., no u/s in the first trimester), and then again at 10 weeks when we heard the h/b with a doppler.

Well, they'll probably want to do a physical including breast exam and pap. At my first real dr's appointment with dd that's what I got. (JOY!) At my first appt. with my mw this time they just did a nutritional overview and reviewed my health history as well as my last pregnancy and drew blood for all the tests they have to do. (And of course the urine sample.) They told me that the pap and physical exam would be at my next appointment. My dr. first time around didn't even try to hear the hb at 9 weeks. She waited until after 12 weeks with all her patients. But my mw this time around tried at my appt. at 9 weeks but we weren't able to hear it. I doubt if they'll do an ultrasound. There's no real need to do one at this point unless you have reason to suspect that things aren't going well. Good luck!

I think most Dr.'s don't even try to hear the h/b before 12 wks because if they can't find it, the mom might get really worried about it when there is usually nothing to worry about At my first Dr.'s appt. with the boys I got a complete physical including a pap smear because I was due for one anyway. Also a health overview and then discussed anything that I was curious about. It might be a good idea to go in with a list of questions so you don't forget anything. At my first midwife's appt. it was really different. She just listened to me talk about my previous pregnancies and birth experiences for a long time and answered any concerns I had. She likes to save the physical for the next appt. after we have at least met and talked.

9 weeks may be early for the h/b, but I've heard of some trying and succeeding. With my first baby, my OB/Gyn, made sure I was up to date on my pap, did an internal to verify that I was pregnant, filled out some stats Canada forms and sent me on my way. I didn't hear his h/b until 11weeks (when she'd agree to try).

This time with my midwife, we spent an hour and a half talking about my last pregnancy, medical history, and nutrition. It was awesome. I was 8weeks, and my next appt is at 12weeks when she promised we'll try to get the h/b (although I've had an u/s since because of some spotting).

Every doctor/midwife is different, but I would expect to talk about your history a little bit, and have questions ready if you need anything answered.

The reason I had an early u/s at 6weeks was because of spotting I had. It lasted for 3 days and then finally disapeared. Not sure if they would want to follow up to make sure everything is ok?

Just an update...they did a pap smear/internal exam. He felt my belly and said I feel like I'm measuring right for my dates. He said they would try for the heart beat next time. I worry so much...I can't wait to hear the heart beat! I'll be 13 weeks at my next appt.
