OK so prior to baby arrival I bought a Moby wrap and two ring slings. Now I have a baby who HATES to be worn in these. It's just too hot to be plastered to my chest. He's happiest as naked as possible and at three weeks he already doesn't want his legs tucked up any longer. That said we want to take off and travel in a few weeks and I need a carrier that will work for this. I'm looking at the Ergo and the Baby Bjorn which are locally available but I can also order stuff and ship from the US if people have better ideas. Think of the hottest day ever and let me know what carrier you'd be able to stand wearing. GO! ;)
How do people baby wear there? I am sure there are tons of options for you.
The bjorn has a very short life (only to 20 or so lbs, I think) and is not good for the hips... If you are choosing between the 2, go for the ergo. With the ergo though, you will need to tuck his legs up for a while still. DD1 was giant and I was only able to spread her knees after 3 months (she was up to 19 lbs at that point and very tall).
Do you have a ring sling? That seems to have the least fabric and can have him side saddle a bit so he isn't so froggy.
There are super light weight ring slings and also woven wraps that may work for you. Try the baby wearing forum, I am sure there are tons of ladies who live where it is hot.
I wear the ergo in summer usually, but I have to say that I have always worn my kids less when it is REALLY hot.
I'm in SoCal, and lemme tell you, the infant insert with the Ergo is HOT! I love the Ergo, and I'm glad I have it, but we use a rolled up receiving blanket under her bottom rather than the insert (and I support her head with my hand or another blankie), and I only wear a tank if I'm going to wear that. Still, it's cooler than the Moby.
My LO hated the Moby in the newborn hug hold, too. I went ahead and started putting her in it in the regular hug hold, with her legs dangling, while she was sleepy. She likes that much better, and will go into it pretty happily now as long as she's not already upset. Again, you have to mind the head a bit, but it's definitely worth it. So, even though it's still warmer and you may not want it in a hot climate, you may still be able to use it around the house; that's what I do.
Granted, my LO is really big for 5 weeks - almost 23 inches and about 12 lbs - so YMMV.
second the mei-tei
i've found w/ light cotton, my babies like the ring slings, but not the wrap slings in the summer. and i have a homemade mei-tei from my mother (she loves the slings and wishes she had them when she had her 5 kids. she found the mei tei w/ her 5th). winter, wrap slings rock. i can use the ring sling and just have the material between me and baby and it works as well. i let them kind of ride lower like in a hammock instead of pressed up tightly against me. i make sure the inner edge of fabric is tight and high, but not the middle.
can't speak to the other ones, b/c i have never used them. i have 2 ring slings (one thick cotton, one very light), one woven wrap, and one mei-tei. and i love them all. but for different seasons and purposes. i'm pretty hard core ring sling fan until my babies get heavy enough that the one shoulder is too much (around 25-30l lbs for me)- then i like wraps. mei-tei is for in between and hot weather.
But I'd think, heat wise, the ergo and mei tai would be similar. And like others said, don't get an infant insert, just fold up a small blanket or prefold under the bum.
Oh, but legs will have to be tucked in. The seat is too wide for legs out at this age.
And for wovens there are some super thin ones out there.
Girasols maybe? Wouldn't be super comfy with a heavier baby tho. But you could do legs out and even back carries once you get comfortable with it. Can't do back carries with stretchy wraps.
