Metformin for Gestastional Diabetes?

Has anyone used it? I had GD my last pregancy and have been checking my blood sugar regularly with this one (I'm twelve weeks). My fastings are high (average 135) but they seem okay during the day. My doc mentioned Metformin but I am leaning towards asking him to just put me on good ole' fashioned insulin as the body already produces it and I know it's safe. Does anyone have any input? Would really appreciate it.

PS- I have Hashimotos and also take Levoxyl and T-3.

Gestational diabetes usually develops later in pregnancy; twelve weeks seems really early to me. Have you been tested for diabetes outside of pregnancy?

Yes I was prediabetic so I knew to start tracking my blood sugar early. They put me on insulin yesterday as I told them I would prefer it. Thanks!

How is the insulin so far? I had GD with my last pregnancy and my endo wants me to take insulin this time around also. I would prefer it to metformin. Also, have you been tested for late adult onset diabetes? It's like a slow acting type 1 that can look like type 2, but tends to happen to lower risk people. It is very commonly diagnosed in pregnancy. Anyway, good luck fellow diabetic!

Well, I should probably answer this in a few days because right now I am very frustrated! I am sick and that is making my blood sugar weird and everything is very confusing. But it's only been two days so I think things should settle down soon.

Unfortunately, I am high risk for type 2. So many in my family have it and with my Hashimotos that also puts my risk higher. Plus I am a bit overweight which doesn't help.

I would definitely do insulin over metformin, if you are willing to go that route. Insulin is already in the body and has been used for a looooong time.

I have insulin resistance/PCOS and went on Metfornin in order to conceive. My doctor actually had me stay on it till I gave birth to help avoid GD. I did a lot of research and it's actually just as safe for most women as insulin, but it also depends on why you're taking it. For me, it worked well and i'll probably be going back on it soon to help regulate my blood sugar.
