I found toward the end of pregnancy if I had chocolate milk with some cinnamon around 10 pm my fasting numbers were perfect. Maybe you need to play around with snacks at bedtime?

This SUCKS!  Baby number 5.   I'm only 14 weeks, and I'm already having blood sugar issues. Never had it this early before.  I was Undiagnosed with baby 1, but he was 9.5 pds.  I lost baby #2 at 26 weeks.  Diagnosed with number 3, Dr. Didn't believe me with number 4, my fasting was too normal.  Here I am at number 5.  It PISSES me off!  My mom and dad eat junk all day long, both have metabolic syndrome.  I learned from their crappy example, and I eat quite healthy, I'm not overweight.   For Hell's sake I'm still having morning sickness, wouldn't it be nice of God to let me deal with one at a time?   It's so hard to manage blood sugar when you're puking.  When all you can keep down is a damn slice of toast, or some grapes!  My fasting this morning was over 100,  haven't eaten since 7 pm.  I haven't been tracking to much yet because I'm so early, just randomly.  I took it this morning because my tongue broke out in sores are I had a fruit and kale smoothie yesterday, at lunch time.   Which I've been too sick to eat until yesterday, I mean, really... 1 cup of  fruit and KALE?!    I only ate protein for dinner because the tongue sores are my first sign of Blood Sugar problems.

AGGHHH!!   This is such bull, and totally unfair that a healthy person suffers, when everyone around her eats junk with no problems.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping to hear some experiences with GD and giving birth. I was diagnose about 3 weeks ago. I was put on a strict diet plan and exercise (I wasn't exercising at all but the diet plan wasn't *that* much different that I already eat - I have a gluten allergy so don't eat a lot of carbs anyway). The diet did nothing except slightly lower my day time numbers - my fasting stayed up. So here I am on 2 kinds of insulin, twice a day. It took a long time to sort out how much I would need but as of yesterday my numbers seem pretty good.

 

I had an u/s last week and the tech estimates baby is about 6lbs already (at 31 weeks). She did note that everything measured large though - not just the abdomen. My DD was 9lb 7oz (I skipped the GD test with her) and I delivered her at home with a fairly short labour but 3 hours of pushing. Because I've been at the GD clinic so much I'm hearing about all the terrible things that can go wrong and now I've talked myself into thinking I won't be able to deliver this baby vaginally because it will be too big :( I'm terrified something will go wrong. I had 5 first trimester losses before this pregnancy which is adding to my anxiety.

 

Any words of wisdom on how likely it is that I can actually do this???

Oh girl, I KNOW what you mean!! I got on insulin at 12 weeks! Diabetes SUCKS!! In these early weeks just do the best you can and get on insulin if needed. I am a healthy person, but diabetes is in my genes. It's totally no fair! Good luck and please ask any questions you need to. :-)

Hi everyone. I am 40 weeks tomorrow, diagnosed at 11 wks, started insulin at 14 just for overnight.
To my complete surprise, I was told at my last appt that they had me scheduled for induction this past weekend! I am apparently in big trouble with my provider for declining. I had my midwife, her boss, and a perinatologist all contact me over the weekend to state their preference and opinion that this baby needs to come ASAP. So, I've been flitting around, dragging my feet, really not wanting to be induced, but fielding their calls, and going in for the additional NSTs that they are requesting. I'm getting more anxious. I really feel that my natural labor will be sabotaged if I induce. But, I'm also tired of fighting them and feel like I just want things to be over.
Has anyone else active on here experienced this? Do you guys know what your medical team has in store for you? What are your thoughts on induction? What are you going to do?

What is their reason for induction? Just having diabetes is not a reason from what I understand but if there are other complications then that may change things. Do you have preeclampsia? Are they saying that the baby is really big?

Being induced can increase your changes of not having a natural labor but their are reasons to do it that are valid. Just depends what they are saying those reasons are..

The reason for induction is standard of practice - on the idea that baby will either be too big or the shoulders/stomach would be too big for the pelvis.
Typically providers request induction at 39 weeks.

You can ask them to show you research that supports induction. Does the supposed risk of shoulder dystocia (the concern with a big baby) outweigh the risks of induction and potential cesarean for failed induction?

Luckily, I put the doctors off just long enough and went in to labor naturally on my due date. Hard labor for just over 2 hours and pushed for 13 minutes, and poof, there he was smile.gif 7lbs 15oz, 21 inches and all around perfect. No issues for either of us with our blood sugar testing. Seems as though my sugars are back to normal. Feels so nice to not have to take my bs all the time or have to write down everything I eat!!!

Ladies, 

 

I could really use some guidance. I have had two +3 urine screens now and my homebirth midwife is giving me the 1-hr test in 2 weeks. The hospitals here suck. I don't want to risk having to take insulin and not being allowed to homebirth. 

 

I don't have any risk factors other than age (I'm 33). I've always had trouble gaining weight and had a super fast metabolism. I did have hyperemesis both times and this pregnancy I probably upped my risk for GD because I couldn't stomach any protein until 12 or so weeks and ate small amounts of sugars all the time to try not to throw up. 

 

My first pregnancy my birth center midwives pushed me to gain 40 lbs, which I did with a really crappy diet (a pint of ice cream every day). Skip ahead several years - I am much more health-conscious now. In the year before this second pregnancy I had unintentionally lost a TON of weight BECAUSE I had been on a nutritional regimen that was low-carb by happenstance (Eat to Live, sounded awesome in theory but clearly not right for me). I just kept losing and losing until it was scary, and no matter how many good fats I ate, the only way I could gain any weight back was by adding starches back into my diet.

 

This time around, my diet before pregnancy and (once my hyperemesis was controlled) during this pregnancy has been quite healthy. Because I knew that blood sugar spikes are bad for baby even if you're not GD, I already tended to eat carbs only when paired with protein. I rarely eat anything overtly sugary. So my midwife can't understand why I'm getting these high glucose tests - both taken after pretty normal eating. 

 

 

My diet is already very restricted due to multiple food intolerances. It is a huge victory that I am gaining a healthy amount of weight despite the limitations on my diet. I feel worried that if I do end up having GD, (1) I will go crazy from having to be even more obsessive about my diet than I already am from food intolerances, (2) I will lose weight or not gain because of more restricted carbs and (3) my baby will not be nourished and will suffer - especially if I end up on insulin?

 

Does anyone have any advice for me? Any ways to prepare for the test? Any particular ways to eat in the week before testing, or on the morning of?

PS - Throughout my life I've reacted kind of badly to fruit sugar in raw or cooked fruit - it tastes way too sweet to me and makes me feel a little weird. I never had that feeling with plain old sugary foods. Now that I'm pregnant, I feel a little yucky if I eat something that's only carbs, no protein.

First off, big hugs. I'm sorry this is happening. From everything I have read (and I have read a lot because I have insulin controlled GD), there is really nothing you have done to have caused this. The whole "risk group" is kind of a farce, because there are folks who don't get GD that are heavy and/ or unhealthy, and folks who do get GD who are very healthy and/or thin. In fact, sometimes thinner women who don't see themselves as at risk can have it and never know. Then there's my friend who weighs 350+ lbs and she had no complications whatsoever. Go figure!

Most women can control GD through diet, so don't assume that you are going to be on insulin. It's only a very small percentage of women that have to be on insulin. Do you know what your fasting numbers are right now eating your normal diet? Fasting numbers usually are the ones to dictate whether or not you will have to be controlled with insulin or another drug.

Both my last pregnancy and this one have had to be controlled with insulin. I have a beautiful four year old who is very healthy and another healthy baby on the way (I'm 39 weeks). The best thing you can do now is try not to stress too much, eat healthy and exercise when you can. I hope you either don't have GD or if you do that it can be easily controlled. <3

Hello everyone! I joined this forum as a first time mom. I think it will be very helpful. I was just diagnosed last week with GD at 30 weeks. This is only the 4th official day I've been on my diet, but I noticed some spikes. My numbers are not extremely high, but some are higher than what they want me to be. My fasting numbers seem to be worse on the weekend. Could this be because I am sleeping longer? I also woke up the past two days with a stuffy nose and a cough. The stuffiness and coughing goes away during the day and returns at night. Anyway, the past two mornings fasting numbers were 107 and 102. They want me at 95. My breakfast number yesterday was 130. I am following the meal plan given to me by the diabetic tech, so it is frustrating. I switched to soy milk hoping that would help and walked for 30 min last night. The rest of my numbers were low. I just want to get a hold of this to avoid taking insulin. I am also under some stress because my mom is terminally ill. Any thoughts?

moonpetal65, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes back in October. I have been able to stay "diet controlled" without insulin by exercising 30 minutes 6 days a week and following the GD diet that my dietician recommended. I don't drink any milk, or liquid "food", in the morning because that always seems to cause spikes in my blood sugar. There is a "dawn effect" that causes blood sugars to be higher if you test later in the morning rather than your "regular" time.

 

The thing that annoys me the most is that stress, not drinking enough water, and forgetting to wash my hands can all be reasons for my blood sugars to be "higher". Potatoes and whole wheat bread are my nemesis - even though I can have 4 carbs for lunch and supper, I can only eat 2 carbs worth of potatoes or bread otherwise I get a high reading. 

I started out with 2 carb breakfast, 2 carb snack, 4 carb lunch, 2 carb snack, 4 carb supper, and 2 carb supper snack. I am having twins and wake up really early so now I eat two 2 carb snacks in the morning. I hope you can get your sugars in control.
