Doing the traditional test, an alternate, or declining?
For my first, I did the drink, barely slid by. (9lb 2oz)
For my second, I declined and it wasn't an issue in my baby or the birth (8lb 4oz).
For this one, I'm considering testing but doing either the meal or periodic testing at home. My midwife briefly gave me the options on my way out today, so I'll ask her more next time. I am doing a homebirth. I eat maybe 75% traditional foods and my main splurge is a Starbucks Mocha with occasional homemade dessert with real food ingredients.
My options are:
2. non fasting glucola drink
3. testing blood sugars at home
She said the non fasting glucola drink isn't that different than a meal at home, since you would be having breakfast. I'm glad it wouldn't be fasting...when else would anyone drink 50g of sugar with no meal? I am doubtful I would do the drink though, it's quite unnatural.
I don't know how often or long I'd test if I opt for that one - has anyone else done that? Can you rent a monitor (and buy strips of course)?
Does anyone have any helpful research they've saved? I did some reading a couple of years ago that influenced my decision not to test that time, but am open to different thing this time. My weight is about the same as last time - I started out 10lbs heavier but I have gained less so far, so it's about on schedule with this point in my last pregnancy. My dad has diabetes and I know it *can* show up in any pregnancy even if I haven't had it before. I'm not worried about big babies - only big babies from unmonitored GD. If I did have GD, I am confident I could manage it well.
If you had GD, did you gain more weight than other pregnancies? Did you have additional ultrasounds (if a homebirth)?
