I had told my sister, mom, and a couple of close friends, but last night we told our kids. I said I had something to show them, and I pulled out a teeny tiny newborn diaper cover out of a bag and held it up. It only took a couple of seconds before my oldest said "You're pregnant." Then my next oldest repeated, "You're pregnant." My third asked, "You're pregnant?" My fourth just made a really funny face like he didn't know what to do- so silly. Our littlest was just running around, but my daughter said, "Mommy has a baby in her belly." He said, "I want to see it!" They wanted to talk right away about when the baby was coming, where it would sleep, what we'll name it...and they all said they hope or think we're having a girl. My fourth said, "Yeah, we only have one girl sister." I was so surprised about how happy they all seemed. Before going to bed my oldest, who's taller than me, held out his arms to hug me and said congratulations again. I told him I was worried that he'd be bummed because he was going to high school, and it would be weird if his mom was pregnant...he said no, it's fine. My daughter had said she hoped we didn't have any more kids, but now says she meant she hoped we didn't adopt any kids. She's excited and says the baby will sleep in her room. We joked that the baby would sleep in my oldest's room, which is tiny and has a loft bed : )
So the cat's out of the bag! My husband told his parents today- his dad was really happy and his mom managed a congratulations with a wrinkled brow. She raised five kids so just knows the reality we're creating for ourselves- the work, the chaos- but I don't think she embraces the love like we do, doesn't see her grandkids hardly ever.
I told a friend at lunch today, so that was fun! Husband told a couple of friends last night and they were supportive.
And I sent a message to all of my preschool families who've enrolled for next year (I have a small in-home preschool, usually just 6 or 7 kids), and so far 1/2 the families have responded really positively, even though I have to take a six week maternity leave after winter break.
So all in all, the announcing is going well : )
