The water birthing parts of my birth plan:
•I intend to labor and birth in the water. If at any time I am no longer comfortable in the water, I intend to find another suitable, comfortable place to labor.
•I intend to "catch" the baby myself (in the tub). If at any time I feel less than completely confident in my ability to do so correctly and safely, or if I find myself in a position where this is impractical or impossible, I intend to call for backup loudly and immediately.
This will be my first and my first water birth so I can't answer your questions with experience. But a lot of the mamas I saw in the videos leaned on the air filled sides of the tubs, so they were kind of upright, yes, but with support. I saw one in a hard Jacuzzi type tub and she did not look as comfortable at ALL. The water wasn't quite deep enough to cover the top of her belly and she couldn't lean comfortably on the sides. Glad I will have the air filled kind.
I agree with what you are saying, if I feel like getting out of the water at some point, I will. I'm going to try different positions to see what works for me. My midwife said I could get in and out as needed.
Not sure if I will catch the baby or not. I've seen mothers do it in the you tube video and I'm not sure I want the responsibility. On the other hand, I don't really want lots of hands reaching in and doing things either. I think my husband will be my backup. Thanks for bringing that up, I intend to clarify that with my midwife. The more we are all on the same page, the better.
