Almost exclusively BF 15 month old newly constipated.... Change in mama's diet to blame?

My 15 month old DD is still almost exclusively BF, eating only novel amounts of food here and there. She has been dealing with constipation over the last week. She's not eating any constipating foods, although she does drink almost no water.  She is peeing plenty, so I don't feel that it's dehydration.  I am at a loss as to what's causing it.  I did make a change in my diet to lose weight, and I am losing weight.  May the constipation be caused by something in my diet or a reduction in supply from decreased calories? Help??

Is she showing any signs of discomfort? If she seems to be happy and content as usual, I would not be too concerned. It is probably unlikely there is something wrong since you are nursing (and if she is displaying typical behavior). Breastmilk is perfectly made to fit the nutritional needs of your little one, often with less waste. I have had a couple of children have similar situations when exclusively breastfeeding. It could just be a growth spurt. In my case, they were still acting completely normal, and once we got to about the week mark, they finally had a movement ... like paste. :-) And then all was well. If there's not any straining or pain when she does finally go, I'd chalk it up to some amazing nutritional efficiency.

I hope the two of you are able to, pardon the pun, get some relief!! ;-)

Ha ha ha I know what you mean about the efficiency! My girl is usually an every 2-3 days kinda gal, and even constipated it has been the same, but she has had very dry and very difficult to pass stool for the last week, with screaming, sweating, etc.  In a panic when she was screaming and trying to pass I ripped off her diaper and, ahem, helped the too large stool come out.  She's been a bit more agreeable to eating and drinking since she did have a movement so I am putting prune juice in what little water she drinks. But I was confused as to why a change like that when there's been no change to her diet...

Oh no!! Yikes... I would say that those circumstances would warrant a more watchful eye. That is interesting...headscratch.gif Did you significantly reduce your caloric consumption? I would go with some prune juice as well. Does she just not drink water because of lack of interest?

Good golly I hope this gets better for the both of you! Poor gal! No fun.

Thanks jen, she's been doing better, I'm making a point to try to slow down the weight loss on my end in hopes to nip that in the bud if that's the problem...
