Carrier addiction- fun thread!

Hey ladies-

DH says I have way too many carriers, but hey, I use them all!  I have had the Mai Thai and Moby since DD1, I bought the Beco when DD2 was a baby, the ring sling was loaned to me and I bought the wrap a month ago.... I do have 3 carriers that I have not used/ Do not fit us yet....

Here are my pictures!

DS in the ring sling a few months ago.... have not got a more recent photo

In the moby about a month ago, but I used it just the other day!

The Beco Butterfly last week at the San Diego Zoo.  This one I love for easy on and off.

My new wrap, I have never had one before and we did pretty good for a while.  DS takes short cat naps, so he wanted down after 30 minutes.

Today with my Mai Thai, a gift from my sister when I was pregnant with DD1.  This is my favorite right now for in the house.  Seems to work best for us right now.

Anyone else want to share?!?!?!

I have so many nice carriers, but Joel isn't crazy about them. I can get by with some short times in a ring sling, but any wraps aren't even worth the time they take to put on.

I am in love with woven wraps. DD takes all her naps up on my back, except for occasional naps in my lap. She will usually nurse to sleep at bed time but sometimes, like right now, we have to come back out to the living room and wrap her up while I pace around with the iPad.
Will post some pics later.

currently, my carrier of choice is a ring sling.. with the beco butterfly as a second choice --  i have more carriers than i can list while typing one handed ;)

new sling- 3mo

old sling, maya wrap, 2 mo

mei tai - 1 month

pouch (hemp hotsling) 2wks

moby 1 wk

We used the Moby quite a bit for the first 9 weeks, then switched to the mei tai and love it!  RS we've used a tiny bit and it was just okay...  Though we'll come back and try it again, I'm sure.

Thanks to a huge local consignment sale (that runs 10x per year if you count all locations within an hour of here), plus $35 spent on Zulily and one registry gift, we actually own, hmmmm...

-2 mei tais

-1 buckle "hip" tei (EllaRoo)

-2 stretchy wraps

-1 ring sling

-3 pouch slings

-1 Wrapsody woven wrap

I think that's it?

LOL, but in my defense, we only spent a total of $140.  I figured I'd just re-sell what didn't work for us.

I would not mind a Beco at all, if I could get it cheap (we tried out all the big name SSCs at the local hippie store when I was pregnant).  But ironically, it is DH who vastly prefers the wraps, and to a lesser extent, the mei tai, so we won't get an SSC, I think, unless I can get a screaming deal.

we have 2 pouches, both were free. naomi never liked them, she always struggled to get right out.

and a ring sling (maya)

that's us this morning. she seems to like the ring sling as a big girl with her legs out.

and the boba wrap

*

and a soft front carrier that we won't use since i bought it before understanding hip alignment (not proper in this one) and i had bought another one that i returned for this reason.

i really want a boba air carrier now. i think she would love it.

Addiction, you say?  Yes, this is the place for me.

DH has a mei tai which doesn't work for me right now (baby hangs out away from my body too much).

But I'm all about the woven wraps and I have a thick wonderful long hemp blend, a thinner long bamboo blend, and 2 cotton short ones (one thicker and one thinner).

I also had a linen blend long one that I sold and I have a long wool blend that I'm probably going to sell.

My favorite carry is with her on my back using the shorter wraps, so I'm really tempted to cut and hem my wonderful hemp one.  Okay, in all honesty what I really want to do is sell something and buy a shorter hemp one so I have it in a long and a short.  But I'm just not sure I want to sell my bamboo one because it's just beautiful (the purple one below).

Hi, I'm Heather and I'm a wrap addict.

I justify my addiction because my baby takes ALL her naps in them and sometimes won't settle at night without being worn.

I want to get a mesh ring sling for the pool this summer and a lighter weight wrap since I get so so hot here.  Wonder what blend I should get for the light wrap... what do you guys think?

I've been thinking about a mesh sling for the beach, too. But I'm trying to figure out if anything I already have will work...

I've heard that linen/cotton blends are best for summer but some of the linen blends are thick so you'd want to find out how thick it is first.
Honestly, though, I'm in hawaii so any time I go to town (my house is generally cooler at 3500 ft. elevation) we are hot no matter what wrap I use just because it's her body right on my body. But, for me, the shorter wraps are the coolest because you have fewer passes going around both of you. Even in the heat I go for comfort because she's on my back for 2 hours at a time sometimes. That's why I want a shorter hemp blend. Even though it's my thickest, it is by far the most comfy.

You can mess around with the long woven you already have to see if you like the carries you would do with a shorty, you'll just have long tails.
My fave is a rucksack with a candy cane chest belt. There are a ton of YouTube videos on different carries.

Im so interested in these other carriers! I have a Moby, and we love it, but I'd love to get something lighter for summer. Yours are so beautiful... Also so intruiged by these back carries. How do you get babe back there? Alone? With help? Where can I learn more?
I can get her on my back alone but I was used to getting my older babies on my back before. I doubt I would have been comfortable doing it with a little baby if I hadn't done it before. But you can search youtube for videos (newborn back carry or woven wrap back carry) and see how it's done. You can't do back carries with a moby though, only with a woven wrap or other carrier designed for back carries. It's the best, though and so much easier to get stuff done than with her on my front.

Thanks Odinsmama!

Oh, and if you get a back safe carrier, you can practice with someone spotting you for a while or practice while kneeling on your bed. smile.gif

yes!  I practice by the bed. I have wore both girls on my back, so I feel more comfortable practicing now.

Just wanted to add my 2 new additions....

Water wrap.... DS played for a while then went right to sleep in the water.  Pretty funny.

Got this one in today.  Loving it.  I have to sell a few of mine now, don't know what ones.

Very nice! What kind is it?
How do you like the water wrap. So funny that he fell asleep in the water!!
What are you thinking of selling?

I've mixed up my stash a bit (sold some and bought some) and am thoroughly happy with it now. There are 2 that I rarely use, but are nice to have if my faves are in the wash.

All woven wraps...
Size 3 Storch Ulli (cotton) - pink/purple
Size 3 Hopp (thicker cotton) - green/black
Size 6 NHIndia (cotton/hemp)... Love this one. - Natural color, off white. This is our bed time snuggle wrap.
Size 4 NHIndia that will soon be dyed by me so I don't worry about getting it dirty while tying in parking lots etc.
Size 6 older Hopp (thick cotton) - red/grey

I use the short Hopp and the Indias all day every day, so if I had to pick 2 to get rid of it would be the Storch and the long Hopp. But I'm hesitant to do that since I don't know what I'll want when baby is older.

My only other thought to change things up would be to sell the long Hopp to fund a thinner size 6, except that I'm feeling like I just really like the thicker ones since they're so comfy on my shoulders.

I got the blue stripey one on the facebook baby wearing swap.... it is the little peepers brand from etsy.  It is super lightweight and soft.  The water one is from etsy too... beachfront babies.  It is pretty stiff and kinda scratcy, but DS didn't seem to mind and once in the water, I couldn't tell.  I was hoping to use it on hot days as my normal wrap, but seems like I will prefer the thin 'little peepers' one.  I have a Storch too!  It was the first one I bought and it is a 6.... I think I like the 5 I got now better for length, but like you said, I don't know what I will like as DS is growing.  I have a size 2 Chimparoo that I need to sell.... 2 is ways too short for me.  I have a ring sling, so I don't need something that I would just tie as a sling.  My other carriers are the ergo and other soft structure carriers.  I got each of my wraps for under $100, so I am always looking for the lower end of things.  I still love the moby, but I think DS may be getting a little too heavy for it.  He ends up slipping down a bit now. We go in on the 17th for his 4 month appt.  Can't wait to see how much he weighs.  Think it is about 16 lbs.

In the Ergo and not screaming! Yeah!

So this is the only real success story I have in the baby-wearing category.

We can do this for up to an hour.

I also have (in--sadly--unused condition)

1 Moby wrap

2 Ring slings

I'm hoping with some of the holds for older babies he might get more into these later. Fingers crossed!

We did our first successful back carry in the wrap today :) The last few times we tried he'd end up crying while I was trying to get him back there but today he cooperated and even fell asleep after about an hour of me doing housework (!!).

I watched a youtube video about "getting a good seat in a rucksack" to help -- I always feel like the rucksack is going to come out from under his bum and he'll fall, but it seemed pretty secure.

I love this thread! You mamas are all so beautiful - and rockin' the wraps!

I've decided to upgrade from the (thick, black, hot & stretchy) Moby to a more versatile woven wrap. I'm intruiged by the semi-stretchy hybrids that are apparently safe for back carries. Anyone have experience with these? Also, I'm still (sadly) totally overwhelmed. Once I have time to do research, gonna see if I can find a used one for suuuper cheap. (Hubby handles the spending right now, and I'm not bringing in much $$ yet...)
