Homebirth with possible Medicaid coverage- must I have a CNM or just a CPM?

Does anyone know if Medicaid covers any portion of Homebirth fees in the state of Virginia, or where I can go to find out this info?  I recently applied but haven't received coverage yet, and I was told by Social Services I would have to wait for coverage and then call the office to get the answer.

Furthermore, I have chosen a group of midwives (2 amazing CPMs) over the CNM at another office.  I plan on delivering at home.  Must I deliver with a CNM to get any reimbursement or coverage, or can I deliver with a CPM?

Any info on this would help tremendously.

I don't know anything about what is covered in VA, but I would check out the state human services department website, and see if there is a section about Medicaid for pregnancy. They may tell you there what is covered, or may tell you what their Managed Care Organizations are, and you can then look at their member information.

Also, have you cross-posted this in a Virginia tribal area on the forums? I would bet someone there knows for sure.

I'm very lucky in New Mexico - Medicaid covers homebirth as long as they are licensed and approved to accept Medicaid.

Your best bet for a quick answer is to ask the providers you've already chosen if there's any way they can take Medicaid.  This is going to be really different from state to state and I have no idea what the situation is in VA.  I am an LM/CPM and can take Medicaid in WA.

Not sure about how Virginia works but here in Michigan Medicaid does not cover any home birth services.  My sister's was covered by Medicaid but her Midwife was a doctor so she was able to bill it as a doctor.  I am seeing a midwife and paying out of pocket for that but I did apply for medicaid just in case I need to visit the ER and I used the insurance for my blood tests.
