Night nursing and teeth... so basically, my understanding is that some babies rot their teeth by nursing at night and not brushing their teeth afterward (obviously, who nurses a kid to sleep and then brushes their teeth?!). And then there are some kids that nurse at night for years without any teeth problems. Breastmilk has antibacterial qualities that do help prevent the growth of nasties. It also has sugar. I think what it comes down to is predisposition to tooth decay. I loved my dentist in Austin, TX b/c he made a lot of sense with convincing arguments that none of the other million dentists I've been to have done. He believed that genetics was almost 100% of tooth health. He had worked on Native American reservations for years and seen the worst dental hygiene and the healthiest teeth. And in his city practice he saw great dental hygiene and horrible teeth. So basically, early cavities most likely have more to do with genetics than with night nursing or teeth brushing practices. If you and your dh have pretty healthy teeth, I wouldn't worry. If one or both of you are plagued with teeth decay issues, then I might worry a little more and think about night weaning. I'm ready to night wean at this point regardless of teeth (and we have healthy teeth around here).
Amanda, glad to hear Jasper is feeling better and that he'll be getting his tubes so soon! Yay! My cousin just went through that with her little one... no nursing 4 hours prior, procedure took less than 10 minutes and he was up and about shortly after like it was nothing. Except that it wasn't nothing b/c he could obviously hear so much better immediately and was talking up a storm. He also improved his latch and slept better immediately. FX the same great results happen for Jasper! Good luck with your crazy week!

Well, you don't live in any of the states where case were reported, so maybe it was just those batches!
Kami, sorry to hear about Harlan... I hope he feels much better soon!
