Hi!

Both medical transcription and medical billing/coding can be great at-home jobs. I would say that the pay is better with medical coding. I did transcription both in a doctor's office and as side job at home. I've done some coding, but while working in a doctor's office. It was one of my many job responsibilities as a surgery scheduler. If you have experience in either of these fields, I'm sure you can find at-home positions. They are out there, and will increase as Obamacare gets underway. If you are interested in getting into one of these fields, you will need to take courses... usually they are certificate programs at local community colleges. I would stay away from online schools, as they don't prepare you with actual work experience and are not accredited (I did an online course for transcription and it was worthless). Unfortunately, medical transcription positions and coding positions rarely hire anyone with no experience. I have found that the at-home transcription positions usually require at least two years work experience in multiple medical specialties. I got lucky with the one job I got at-home, as it was for just Orthopaedics, and I had been in that field already for a year. It think it is definitely worth it to get a certificate/degree in one of these fields because the job outlook is very good. You will probably have to work outside of the home for a year or two to gain the experience necessary to be marketable for the at-home positions. I am looking into medical coding, and am searching around my area for courses that I can take to get a certificate. I will also do an internship while taking the courses. Hope that helps!

I work in a doctor's office now, so I have that experience. From my research since making this post, coding/billing jobs are rarely found for at-home work. They're most often done in an office due to the frequent need for actually seeing patient charts. For this reason, I'll be going with the transcription program.
