I am apparently due the same day as you, Harmonious. And I too am abusing the July 4th holiday to sneak more pay. Last time I worked until my due date, and I went into labor 4 days later. And I was tired going into that labor. It was because of circumstances of the leave and trying to protect my time at home with the little one (had only 6 weeks which turned into 5.5).
This time I decided to take as much time as we thought we could manage. I am the primary wage earner and my husband will be staying home again with this baby. He worked this year though, while still being more of the primary caregiver. Now his job is over- ahh, the schedule of a teacher.
I've been working and even doing a little extra time to save up for leave, because 60% of a salary when it's the primary salary is not enough to live off of. (Don't get me started on maternity leave in the US...). But it's made it possible to get 3+ weeks off before my due date and another 3 months after the birth, with my husband home too the whole time. We are so excited and I've been negotiating with this babe to stay in so mama and papa can have a rest break before we welcome him.
Inlove2009, I can't believe your work is being so unreasonable. I would definitely get a note from your provider to get out earlier and check with the disability office on your rights.
I'm in California too, and we qualify for an additional 6 weeks of disability beyond the 6 week of federal disability. I intend to milk every last minute of it.
I actually really like my job, and part of me will be excited to return in the fall, but I'm feeling a little envious of the longer breaks mentioned here.
