Went for my 12 week appointment at the midwife today. Took my hubby hoping that we would get to hear the heartbeat. Thought that we would hear it for sure now. Nada. We found my heartbeat, but not the baby's yet. I am a bit overweight (ok maybe 50lbs, but I am almost 6 feet tall, it is pretty spread out) and the midwife did say that this can muffle the sounds. She told us that if we wanted to get an ultrasound, we could, but she didn't seem very concerned. She also said we could just come back in a couple weeks and try again with the doppler. I still feel VERY pregnant (ie like crap) so I am disinclined to think that I have a hormonal problem. This is our first baby, though, and I just want some reassurance. Has any one else experienced this?
how far along are you? with my first pregnancy, my midwife couldn't hear the heartbeat at 10 weeks. She said it was because I have a tipped uterus. Had to come back at 12 weeks to hear it. This time around we could hear it at 10 weeks (she said the uterus probably "got into position" faster because it's BTDT :)
With my first I was around 12 wks and they couldn't find my dd's heartbeat with the doppler, but I was with an OB so the just took me over to the ultrasound room and there it was! Perfect and strong. With this one there was no problem with hearing baby's heartbeat with the doppler at 11 1/2 wk (I went yesterday.) If you are going to worry for the next couple weeks, I would go get an ultrasound! Depending on where you are there are places that will do free ultrasounds. You could go just to put your mind at ease. Dopplers can be tricky. Right now I am seeing my midwife and OB because of losing my last two babies. My Midwife had brought her doppler but said she was hesitant to try to find the heartbeat in case she would have trouble finding it, she didn't want me to worry . So I waited till I saw the OB and they had no trouble! I'm sure everything is fine!! Keep us updated!
I had a vaginal ultrasound scan at 8.5 weeks and saw the heartbeat, but had a Doppler at 11.5 (this week) and the midwife couldn't get a sound, she explained that my uterus was still low and the baby was out of range, that she was sure next time I come to see her in a month, it would be in the right place.
She also said my tummy muscles were quite strong so I might be giving the Doppler muscle feedback; interesting as I'm a lazy yogi at the best of times and thought I'd really let my belly relax!
She wasn't worried so I'm not worried, I think this happens alot.
I too am still feeling pregnant and have strong moring sickness (all day long) so I'm taking this as the baby hiding for the time being!

I had a ultrasound at 7+ weeks after having some concerns and bleeding. We saw the heart flickering on the screen. This week (at 10+5) was the first time we tried with the Doppler. I learned at the ultrasound that I have a retroverted uterus. This week, we heard the placenta and baby movements with the Doppler, but only a few (3-4) blips of the heartbeat. Nothing continuous. My uterus has just barely moved up our of my pelvis, and I am not really concerned about the fact that we didn't hear a steady heartbeat this week -- mainly because of my uterus shape. But looking forward to when we do hear it loudly!
