I woke up Thurs (June 27th) morning about 3am to go pee and noticed I felt funny. This was a very notible feeling for me because this is how my super fast labor started and I was nervous about another speedy baby! However, I was not having any contractions so didn't think too much about it. I was pretty crampy, low cramps in my pelvis and belly but i'd been having these for a few weeks already so didn't find it any different. I went back to bed.
From then on 3:30am-6am I slept on and off and was occasionally awakened by waves of cramps. I tried to time them but they were very sporadic and nothing like contractions to me, anywhere from 15-30 min apart. I decided to get up anyway, I showerd and puttered around the house a bit. I was still having lots of cramps so decided to check myself, I could tell i was dialated past a 2, but wasn't sure, I also started bleeding when I pulled my fingers out but still had no contractions. I called my mom (who is a labor nurse and lives 10 blocks from us) and she drove down and checked me: 4cm and 80%.
Since I didn't feel in labor my mom went home and I layed down to rest again but couldn't get comfortable with all the cramping. I got up and left a message for my MW letting them know I thought I would have the baby that day and would call them when anything changed.
By 7:30am the cramps were getting stronger but still not painful and still no contractions. I did have consistent bloody show though. I woke up my DH, and told him I thought today was the day and that I wanted to get ready to go to my moms were I'd planned to labor. We woke up the boys and arrived at my moms at 8am. About that time the cramps were starting to come in stronger waves and there was lots of pressure, I was definitely waddling around and he felt like he was going to just fall out of me. I had my mom check me again and I was at 6-7 cm. I called the MW and the rest of our family and everyone started coming over. We have really big families and I love to be surrounded by loved ones while giving birth, I also believe in having home births and personally feel the best way to educate others about how safe and wonderful a hb can be is to make them more accessible- my births are open to any friends and family who want to be there! I feel empowered by everyone's support.
Throughout the morning I kept waiting for the 'big ones' to hit: the full belly tightening, fist clenching, exhausting contractions but they never came. These were the most welcoming warm contractions, almost peaceful. I could FEEL my lower belly and vagina opening and stretching with each warming wave, and I continued to breath deeply and purposefully with breaths that moved up my left leg and our my vagina, clearing a smooth path for my baby. I could hear my friends and family gathered in th living room, chatting and eating breakfast while I hung out with DH in the bedroom. Every now and then one of the kids ( my boys ages 5 and 7 and my nephew age 6) would come in and give me a hug and kiss. They were SO excited the baby was coming!! When the MW got there around 9am the kids started calling out 'the midwives are here! The midwives are here! The baby is coming!' Then they all took her hands and paraded her into the bedroom where I was. It was precious and wonderful to see their joy and excitement and helped me feel stronger that they were going to watch me birth.
It was at that point things picked up a little more. I could feel the waves getting stronger and felt my body start to bear down through them. I knew I'd hit transition when my body started moaning through the waves. They never reached that intense point though that I expected, it was more like I would get one strong wave, then an easier short one, then a strong one again. I was talking to my DH between waves and drinking water.
My water broke at 9:42am and I layed down on the bed to birth. I could hear the MW inviting my family into watch and I felt so strong and excited. I knew I was about to meet my baby. I pushed 4 times and he was born at 9:54am into a room full of happy tears and love.
