I think it includes crying and you feeling heartbroken.  It will get better though.  Hang in there hug.gif

Seems like it depends on how aggressively you wean. If it's really hard for both of you, you can back off a little. I think using lots of distraction helps a lot. And going pretty slow. Good luck!

I haven't weaned but I did cut back using a lot of distraction. Before my dd was like 10-20 times a day and she is over three! Now she is maybe 5 times a day. I found that much more manageable. Maybe you want to work towards cutting back first then wean?

thank you for your replies...I am trying to cut back actually....sometimes he just breaks down and i am not able to distract at all, then I give up and nurse him....maybe that's totally wrong...but can I just let him cry? it seems totally wrong!

For me, I'd choose one nursing session at a time to get rid of, and I started with the least favorite nursing session, and the last one we got rid of was the favorite one (which in our house was just before going to sleep at night.)

So just choose the time of day when he is least interested in nursing, and conversely most easily distracted, and distract him for just that time period, regularly, until he doesn't ask anymore. Then choose one more nursing session. It will take a while, but it should be pretty non-traumatic.

It is never wrong to be compassionate towards your child. <3 Or anyone for that matter!
