Did I give myself food poisoning? Help please.

I'm 8 wks pregnant with twins. Been having morning sickness & intermittent all day nausea since week 6 but never vomited.

Last night I made dinner, beans and rice and a sugar-snap pea miso-ginger salad and about an hour and a half after we ate I started feeling unwell. Husband felt fine. I have spent the last twelve hours vomiting up everything and dry heaving/bringing up bile.  No sleep and I still feel sick but haven't heaved since 5:30am. Husband went to work at 5 (was up with me all night) and I'm alone here and I feel so awful. I need help/advice.

1) How did I give myself food poisoning with beans and rice and salad? The salad dressing had sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, almond butter (sub for tahini), miso, honey, ginger and garlic. The salad itself was  cabbage, sugar snap peas and radishes. The beans were black beans and the rice was plain white rice. I did cook some onions and jalepeños with the beans but I always do that.

2) I didn't have the sweats, chills, diarrhea and abdominal cramps that normally come with food poisoning but I don't think this could possibly have been pregnancy related throwing up ... or could it?

3) I normally have to eat something right away when I wake up to keep morning sickness away but right now I just can't... I have saltines and a glass of water near me but I can't bear to eat anything right now so I am feeling ill from last night and morning sick too.

What did I do to myself? What do I do now?  I feel so sick I just want to cry.

I don't think you did anything to yourself. I think you probably just had a bad night of pregnancy hormones being very intense. A friend of mine was like this during her pregnancy. She couldn't hold ANYTHING down. There have been times for me in this pregnancy where certain foods have made me totally sick for no reason.
Call your midwife or doc and see what they say. I'm pretty sure being preggo with twins can create some pretty crazy hormonal swings but I'm no expert. So sorry you had a bad night! Good luck!!

Also, hubby feeling fine after having eaten the same thing is a good indicator that it isn't food poisoning. :-)

Thanks Dalia. It didn't really feel like food poisoning but it came on so quickly after dinner I just don't know.

Hubs only picked at the salad (basically only ate the snap peas) -- he's a fussy eater, but I ate a bunch of it. Is is even possible for it to be food poisoning given that ingredient list?

He's really worried about me and wants me to go to the doctor but my urine output is okay and I managed to drink a glass of water so I think I'd rather stay put but I want to know if it was food poisoning so we can throw out whatever the offending ingredient was...though, come to think of it, we will probably just throw the leftovers out anyway. I cannot imagine wanting to look at that salad after last night.

At some point in this pregnancy, I threw everything in my fridge out. It all smelled rancid to me. Of course, nothing was rancid, but I thought for sure it was. Pregnancy hormones are crazy.

Can you call your doc? Also, is there any chance it might be a little stomach bug?

Food poisoning usually involves diarrhea as well. Any of that going on?

If you have some really good quality probiotics I would try to take some. :-) Good luck!!

Around 20 weeks I had a similar experience of eating a dinner we cooked with several other people and getting violently ill from it right afterwards even though no one else was sick and it seemed like an unlikely food poisoning culprit.  My sense was that there are just sometimes foods that your body decides to violently reject during pregnancy for a ton of reasons: it was too acidic/non-acidic/fatty/sugary/etc. all at once, there may have been some non-harmful bacteria in there that your body just decided it was better to not risk ingesting, you're on a hormonal roller coaster.  I wouldn't worry.  Just make sure you are staying hydrated and if your appetite doesn't come back in a day go see a doctor.

I had a nasty case if food poisoning about halfway through my pregnancy with dd1. There wasn't much the doctor could do but try to keep me from getting dehydrated. I had to use anti nausea suppositories to slow the vomiting. Anyway, I think your instincts sound right- if you're not showing signs of dehydration you're probably fine. Also, 8ish weeks is about when my morning sickness began this time around. Maybe it's just a wave of hormones, after all? Sounds like a rough night. I hope you feel better!

I didn't see you were 8 weeks. It honestly does make sense that this could be the beginning of some more intense morning sickness. I hope it calms down for you!

I hope you're feeling better. The only thing I can the of, if it was "off" food, is the miso. I know it is alive and shouldn't make you sick, but I have contaminated mine before and had to toss it. Surely, though, you will be fine and so will your sweet babies.

I hope this is not the beginning of severe morning sickness for you. I have experienced what you are going through in previous pregnancies. Drink lots and know that this too shall pass!

Yeah, me too. Kinda wish I hadn't said that!! Let's hope it was a passing thing and you will be feeling well for the rest of your pregnancy!

Thank you for the kind words everyone, it is oddly comforting to know other people have had similar experiences.

I felt progressively better all day and now, at 8pm, I am feeling worse and worse. I really, really, hope this isn't "night sickness" I can't bear another night like last night! I am trying to stay positive but it's hard. MDC helps. grouphug.gif Thank you ladies.

CupOfJoe, I'm sorry your illness seems to be coming back again tonight. The timing and symptoms make me agree with the others, sounds like a normal pregnant stomach to me. I noticed around 8 weeks that foods I previously had tolerated without problem were suddenly off limits. The foods that you describe don't sound like something that would go bad, but they aren't necessarily gentle on the stomach either. You might try a more bland diet (once you get your appetite back). Beans were completely intolerable for me up until very recently. I don't eat a lot of miso, ginger, or almond (nut allergy), but those sound to me like ingredients that could irritate a sensitive stomach. Good luck!

I had morning-noon-night sickness that started exactly at 8 wks and lasted til about 17wks.  Everything made me nauseous, but especially garlic (which i LOVE) and of course the less ate the more I felt like crap.  I finally learned to shovel in whatever I could stomache the second I started to feel off bc the low blood sugar made me feel 10x worse.  I can recall one week where I ate NOTHING but organic canned peaches.  I couldn't hold anything else down, but by 17wks I was fine, no more vomiting or nausea.  Of couse I then had horrendous heartburn the bigger DD got and the more she pushed my innerds up as she refused to relocate lower....oh babieslove.gif
