Camping with a newborn yes or no way?

Thread Starter

I would like to visit my sister this summer but sadly they have absolutely no room to host overnight guests. It's not too far away, only about 2 hours so I wouldn't have to stay over; however, she lives in a tourist area so there is a lot that we could do.

Anyways. Since she has no space to host, I'm wondering how absolutely absurd it would be to try to camp with a newborn (6-8 weeks)? We have a pretty big tent and a snuggle nest so we wouldn't be having LO in the sleeping bag with us or just randomly on the ground.

Thoughts?

If it were a choice between camping with a 6 week old or camping with a 1 year old, I'd take the newborn any day.

Think about it: baby is small and stays where you place her. The only food she needs you'll have. Sling, diapers, clean clothes. That's it. Not bad, really.

How warm will it be over night?  That would be my main concern.  If this isn't an issue, then I think that you can do tent camping.  Just make sure you have somewhere comfy to nurse and somewhere warm and comfy for baby to sleep (in bed with you or otherwise.)

I've camped many times with a newborn, well actually with all ages/stages of kids and never had a problem. I agree that it's really easier with a newborn than toddler!

Totally a yes! The only problem I ever has was when we went camping in Florida in December and I only packed him long sleeves. A couple of onesies fixed that.

Y'all are brave!  I would not be up for it myself!  (on the otherhand, they are still in that sleep a lot stage...)

This was my initial reaction, but now that I'm thinking about it, it wouldn't be too bad would it?
As long you think you and your baby can handle it go ahead and have a good time!

I went camping with a 7 week old newborn this June and it was fine... but make sure you've got a fine enough bug net. The one that came with her stroller didn't keep the no-see-um's off. :)

If you can tent in her yard ( if she has one) this could be a great way to have your own space to sleep...but still have the comforts of home for food prep, toilets and comfortable chairs for breast feeding. We have considered camping with both our babies as newborns (spring babies both)....but the bugs and the lack of back support for nighttime nursing in a tent meant we rented cottages for the first summer to get into the wilderness! FYI outdoor elimination is so handy with a newborn!
