Introducing Solid - Page 2

So background, Baby A is grabbing for everything, but won't take a bottle, and when food (only tried to let her taste mango one time) is put to her lips gives a 'wth??' look, and she can't sit unassisted yet.

At her 6 mth appt the doctor wanted to tell me I need to give her supplements because she isn't eating any solids yet? She literally turned 6mths the day before this appt! The (as expected) recommendation was to start giving her rice cereal, and come back in a month for more supplements if she's not doing well with it. That is one prescription this mama definitely won't be filling...

Anyone else get this pressure and guff from the dr?

Go with your intuition! This advice just sounds old school to me. Do you have any other Dr options?

I hear this from our pedi as well.
I assume you're breastfeeding?
They think breastfed babies won't be getting enough iron all of a sudden at the magical 6 month mark without iron rich solids, fortified cereals or supplements.
I can't look for links/research right now but should be able to dig up something tomorrow. I'm sure both www.llli.org and www.kellymom.com will have some good info if you want to search there.

Certainly will typebug! I think I will be looking for other options very soon, just waiting for confirmation that LO has been added to her father's insurance.

Yes odinsmama, I'm BFing, and have been researching lots on kellysmom and other places. Thank you though. I was mostly just venting. I know Dr's often push solids starting as early as 4 mths but this was the first time I'd heard this supplement garbage. Ah well.. thanks mamas.

oh supplements!  iron, vit D, cause fortified baby cereal is the bomb and has solved all the malnutrition and food intolerance issues in the world.

i hear the same thing- we just did our 6 month visit(i think it was on their record as our 4 month, but he was 5 months b/c of scheduling stuff) and the conversation went something like this-

"Is he eating solids yet?"

"No, I let him play w/ the foods, and he sticks them in his mouth, but doesn't swallow.  I figure the gag reflex will pass soon."

"Hm.  So how do you plan on introducing solid foods?"

"I will keep giving him appropriate soft or dissolving finger foods, and someday he'll go from playing with the food to actually eating it.  Then he will be eating solids!"

"You've done this before haven't you?"

"Um, yeah.  All the rest eat very well, love a diversity of foods, and have no food intolerances.  So it seems to work for us."

"Sounds good.  Since you're not vaxxing on schedule, do you want to come in later instead of at the next visit?  The visits are really around the vaccine schedule."

"Sure, can I bring him in at a year?"

"How about 8 months?"

"Okay."

I'm planning on shifting it to a year.  Somehow.  we're just not that exciting.  We went to Cape Cod yesterday, does sand count as a first solid food?  Cause he swallowed a LOT of that stuff!!!

hahah.... I remember when DD2 started eating so much sand from our sand box.... in the mouth, out in the diaper.... that is quite a cleanse!

I have not ever done rice cereal and nothing fortified at all and never had a problem.

HOP - haha about the sand!  DS2 ate grass today, he got off the blanket and face planted in the freshly cut grass - he didn't even do it on purpose but he was gagging on it and chewing... oops.  guess Grass was his first food.

It's only been a day and the gagging is freaking me out already. Sigh!

Day 1: Avocado conquered!

This is our program my Homeopath/Pediatrician has us on:

Week 1: Avocado, Squash

Week 2: Sweet Potato, Banana

Week 3: Apple Sauce, Carrots

Week 4: Green Beans, Prunes

Week 5: Apricots, Asparagus

Week 6: Kale, Mango etc...

Eventually we can start to combine them once they are crossed off the possible allergen list and add stuff like legumes. We're saving non-wheat grains and meats for after 9 months and no wheat, honey, dairy or egg till one year. No shellfish or nuts till after 2-3 years.

Supplements: Vitamin C, D and probiotics
