I recently won a contest where I got a 24 hour urine analysis and the results usually reveal that people are having trouble digesting in one particular area, either fats, proteins or carbs. My results show that I am having significant trouble digesting ALL three! The naturopath I spoke with felt that I wasn't getting a varied enough diet and lacking the enzymes needed to digest properly.
However, I submitted a food diary to her and I'm really surprised that I'm not eating a varied enough diet. Most days I eat about 10 different vegetables and compared to my peers and probably most Americans that's quite remarkable. I alternate between juicing and vitamix smoothies. I am not restricting anything in my diet so I consume all sorts of grains, healthy fats, etc. I have always felt that my diet was so varied and I usually grab almost one of everything when strolling through the produce aisle in the store! The test also revealed that I am "severely depleted in vitamin C". Another shocker because according to my diet...I eat a LOT of vitamin C! So clearly I'm not absorbing the nutrients from all this good food. Dangit!
She suggested a high quality digestive enzyme that is supposedly way better than what you could ever buy in stores. I tend to believe her, I do hope to try it out as soon as I can save up some money. But I'm also wondering about HCL and if I should be taking that. I guess I don't understand why a person who eats healthfully would so severely lack all these enzymes. Which leads me to wonder if it's really enzymes I should be adding. I do understand how people can lack stomach acid over time as they age and after prolonged periods of stress (this would be me for sure!) but I've always eaten a varied diet even as a child so it doesn't make sense that I lack these enzymes for no particular reason.
Also, is this why I feel so tired after eating and why I prefer to fast? I have way more energy if I don't eat. The moment I eat, I just want to collapse and I just can't get moving for the rest of the day. I'd much prefer to skip eating and just stick with hot tea or something as long as I can which is often til about 1pm. I was thinking that maybe my body is exhausting itself trying to digest my food and then not extracting any vitamins/minerals/energy to go on about my day.
So...HCL or enzymes? Or both?
