To me, these books feel like they say, "If you put on this particular suit, you will be the perfect lawyer." That is to say that they tell you what you are supposed to look like as a Christian, but they do not get much deeper than that. Also, they assume we are a very heterogenous society. Finally, the tenants of the book feel like a modern day stoicism to me -- this is the way you are supposed to DO Christianity, as opposed to any kind of spirituality.

Just my 2 cents.

Peace,

It didn't seem like the kind of book where its telling you to be this way or whatever....... It seemed like it was just going to explain your purpose here from God's point of you I think. Well if its going to bring me closer to him than I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
thanks

I've read a good chunk of the book. The moms' group that does book discussion on Fridays at DD's preschool did this book, though not day by day, during Lent.

My problem with the book is that he phrases his points as if Christianity is the only religion to have ever thought of these principles, when that is far from true. Granted his target audience is Christian, California Christians according to the lady leading the group at DD's preschool, but IMO that's no excuse for misrepresenting fact.

In the later chapters about church and community, he comes across to me as pushing too much for group cohesiveness, at the expense of honesty and being true to oneself (if there's that much of a difference of opinion.). He's pushing Group Think, and I don't much care for that.

But if someone's living a life where they've gotten out of touch with what any spirituality is supposed to be about, and Christianity is such a person's path of choice, then I can see how this book could be helpful to them.

You are talking about the book by Rick Warren right? 40 days of Purpose. Your title confuses me. If so, I read it and liked it. I was on the fence with my conversion to Christianity and this book made me want to commit and get baptized. PTL! I needed this book. It was like Christianity 101 for me. I was raised Mormon and still get confused with what is truely Christian. I hope this statement dosent offend. Please, my spirital journey has been a confusing one. But I finallly feel that I have a good foundation on things. However, I am still a baby at this. I am learning new things every day.

I haven't read the book and probably won't. And I honestly don't even know what its premise is....but...

I can't see anything unfruitful about praying and fasting in some way for 40 days about a particular direction. God sees the heart while man sees the outward appearance.

Peace mamas,

I don't think it has anything to do with fasting but 40 days seems to be the magic number in the bible that alot of religions use. Your right nothing I think, aswell, is bad if it is directed in Gods direction.

Our Church just finished going through the 40 days of purpose. We did it in small groups. Most everyone loved it and found great meaning during the 40 days. I did it because dh wanted to, but I was skeptical. I found the "program" to be shallow, but really enjoyed the dynamics of the discussion and fellowship with the other families in our group. I'm just wondering if we will see any lasting change in our church fellowship or in the lives of individuals.
A still skeptical barbara

We are doing it in small groups aswell. It seems to have positive feedback so far. I go tonight so it should be interesting.

hotmamacita said:

And you are saying:

"I agree, hotmamacita. Nothing is bad if it is directed at God."

Is that it?

Okay,
The book I am reading The Purpose Driven life is being reviewed in small groups and the process i guess is being called the 40 day purpose of life.

I basically said I agree than put it in my own words, what I thought she meant which was this

(but yes it was spelt wrong) If that is not what she meant than I am sorry.

Sorry for not being clear 3 children under 4 will do that to you.

we have just finished this in my church in michigan. i was amazed at how well Warren put together the focus so that it could be read by the christians that are still on milk and the ones that are on meat. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested in pleasing God through their life.
