Any Breastfeeding Tips and What Challenges You Encountered/How You Overcame Them

I am new to this site and am already looking forward to hearing from everyone!

I am a first time mother preparing to breastfeed for the first time and would love to hear some open discussion on breastfeeding in this stage, whether tips or challenges that one can run up against and how you personally overcame them. Also if you had a lactation consultant or other support... I am living overseas away from any family or friends!

Those first few days hand expressing into a little spoon and feeding colostrum worked better than pumping if he would not latch.

That the first 6 to 8 weeks are hard just lay in bed and nurse as much as the baby will let you. Screw the laundry and cleaning. Just rest recover and nurse.

It's tricky but worth it. The LLL archives and Kellymom have great info got troubleshooting problems.

Read up on the Dr Jack Newman website as well. I think I would have done things differently with regard to a nipple shield if I had read more before the birth, because in those first few weeks you're in a daze and there isn't as much time for reading for the first time. Now at 6 weeks I'm trying to correct things and it may be too late.

The first month my baby nursed almost constantly.  Really sleep when your baby sleeps and learn to nurse while lying down.  That first month your supply is getting established and it is normal to nurse very often although most doctors say it is not.  After a month it gets much much easier.

When I returned to work, my baby refused to nurse from me.  I would always offer it and if he got upset gave him a bottle of pumped milk.  It was almost a month of tears and pumping on both parts and now he takes it again.  Be very careful about the bottle you choose so it is not too fast.  Also, make sure your daycare understands the difference between giving breastmilk and formula to babies.  They need smaller amounts more frequently.

Overall, just relax and enjoy the ride.  Soon you will be a pro
