favorite newborn carrier?
I use the Moby wrap and I really like it, but it definitely takes some getting used to. I also really like New Native Carrier slings. They are the pocket style and the pocket is nice and deep, which feels more secure than some others I've tried. I agree about the Ergo infant insert, I haven't tried it myself but it looks a bit awkward. Have you considered a woven wrap? Or are wraps just not your style?
We're big ergo users but haven't tried the infant insert. Maybe this time? I have major oversupply and chronic mastitis/ duct issues because of it, so early on I have to stop what I'm doing to nurse. Take them out of carrier, and so on. Can't have any pressure on my breasts while I nurse. So a pocket sling is easier for in & out in those early weeks.
I don't like pouch (or I guess you might call them pocket?) slings. They have to be sized perfectly, and don't grow with the child very well in my experience.
I really, really prefer a ring sling (sleepingbaby.net, or find a good used one on TBW or the swap on FB) and a good quality woven wrap for newborns. Each is adjustable, grows with your child's needs, is usable well into toddlerhood and beyond (good enough for my three year old) although we did add buckle carriers, mei tais, etc. into the mix beginning at three months. Buckle and MT carriers are difficult to position properly with a child who is not yet holding upright and putting both legs out. The width of the carrier would need to be extremely narrow even for the longest of newborns. And it is quite easy to position properly to nurse in a wrap or RS, while in the others it can be rather difficult with a tiny new baby.
So, to recap, my must-haves for a newborn are a good ring sling (I like wrap conversions as they are more supportive at the shoulder and can be comfortably used with toddlers as well) and a nice long woven wrap. Probably a cotton blend, something very soft, something not too thick.
