I just read in Organic Style magazine that microwaving your (damp)sponges for 1 minute will kill all the bacteria/germs in them. I tried it- I recommend letting them sit in there a minute after though cuz there were HOT!

I heard the microwave thing too. I keep a spray bottle of vinegar/water/TTO and spray my sponges with that. I also run them thru the dishwasher with a full load. That gets them pretty clean!

I have noticed since I switched to vinegar cleaning, my sponges dont get stinky anymore......not like before.

The guy that was on Oprah a week or so ago, talking about germs, said you really shouldnt keep a sponge longer than a month. He said to soak sponges in a bleach solution, in fact, that was his answer to everything......sheets, toothbrushes.........yuck!

I am a H2O2 person. Everything, toothbrushes, toilet, sponges, you name it gets cleaned or soaked. My toothbrushes look brand new as does my toilet brush.

I always "cook" my sponges in the micro for 1 minute before using them and I have heard of running them through the dishwasher also (but you need a dw to do that, sigh).

Rainsmom-momto is talking about H2O2, hydrogen peroxide.

I am a pre-med major (biomedical sciences) and have taken a lot of microbiology, immunology, etc classes and one of the easiest ways to kill germs in sponges and things like that is just let them completely air dry between uses, most nothing can survive dry conditions like that because the microorganisms that were hanging around your wet sponges depend on their environment (water or moisture) to survive.

Of course microwaving and running them through the dishwasher is great too....just make sure they also get completely dried out afterwards (I just wring mine out and dry them overnight).
