I've had a heck of a time trying to find a holistic dentist that treats children and understands where I'm coming from. The current dentist wants to put three silver caps on my four-year-old's molars because she doesn't feel that white fillings will hold up. My eldest daughter (now 7) had white fillings to reconstruct her two front teeth as a 15 month old b/c they came in with absolutely no enamel and were literally falling apart. The fillings lasted for six years, because we took great care of them. I understand the dentist's concern and why she wants to do the caps, but I simply don't want to put that much metal - any metal - in my child's mouth. I'm also not convinced that the cavities are that bad. That may seem naive, but we take really care good of their teeth, which the current (and brand new) dentist said is obvious, even the flossing. We left the previous dentist because he wanted to do a silver cap in my eldest's mouth that this dentist doesn't even say she'd need. I don't understand? We had a great dentist for a few years, since my youngest's issues, but he's no longer practicing, which is why I've been searching again. I feel like we hope from dentist to dentist and they're all the same.
I guess I'm looking for support - I want to know that I'm not insane for wanting the white fillings, despite whatever the dentist thinks about their longevity (my kids love the dentist, so having them redone sometime isn't going to break them if these teeth are in there for 12 years). I can't stomach the idea of silver camps in that mouth.
I'm prepared to argue about it, so I'm just hoping that I'm successful.
