Cloth diapering

How often do you wash and change diaper covers? We're using the bummis and thirsties and they haven't gotten dirty per se but they smell like urine pretty quickly and I don't like to keep using them. But I also don't have so many to use a fresh one on each diaper. What do you all do/recommend?

i have been wondering the same thing. also, i have questions about how to snap the covers. i have 3 thirsties with snaps and one mommy's touch from gmd with snaps. each has 3 rows of snaps and i don't know how to use them optimally. for now i'm just using loosest setting on top row... i have another thirsties with aplix cover and love it for ease of use but when we do skin to skin the aplix itches me so i have to put her in a onsie with this cover.

Eilis - I have the snap ones too. I adjust the rows so the cover is smallest but then snap it closed on the tightest ones so its close to noor's body. I agree the aplix is easier to use but so does not work for skin to skin or for nursing. Last thing I need is aplix scratching up my sore nipples!

we wash our covers when they get dirty, for the smell I just spray them with our butt spray, that seems to work.

I've been switching covers every 12 hrs or so. I too have used butt spray on it just in case they started smelling, but honestly I don't think they do.

I have 6 covers that fit her now and that seems to work.

I have 10 covers to cycle through but I think I often go through three per day unless my dh changes diapers and then it is more due to his being less skilled and getting poop on them. I haven't noticed a smell but if one feels wet I let it air out and use another cover. I am using bummis with aplix and flips with snaps. I really like the flip covers even though they are a little big.

ETA: Oh and I wash every 3 days and have an additional 7 pocket diapers which are for night and outings. Mostly it is prefolds and covers though.

I switch covers out every diaper change if I'm not using wool but I just set them out to dry and then use them again. They last at least 2-3 days that way.

Wool is wonderful because I only have to wash every few weeks!

This boy fits his cloth diapers now! Finally the thighs and I both got caught up. All his wool covers are too small smile.gif but at least I know how to size them to his little body now. Getting the knitting needles out today...

Is anyone using flats? I have to say I love the flats this time around. The origami fold is pretty much awesome.

See you later, bags of diaper trash. I won't miss you at all.

I haven't used flats, but when I was buying covers I met a woman who waxed poetic about the zen peace she feels from sitting down to fold diapers.

I hate to admit it but inside, I rolled my eyes. I will never feel that way about laundry.

Then, I realized how many people would roll their eyes at me if I admitted to how much I love doing kitchen prep work, like slicing veggies into perfect slices or how I fantasize about being an alchemist or witch when I make a stew or sauce.

Lol. Zen while folding diapers. I'm
Usually sprinting in my folding to get the dang job done so I can move on to the next 100 things I have to do. I like the look of a tidy shelf, but it's probably more OCD than zen!

Does zen = slightly comatose?

Also, has anyone see/used g diapers? Any opinions? We're thinking we might try to transition to cloth (of some sort) once we're no longer in newborn poop-a-thon mode.

Haha zen. I do not have that when stuffing my pockets!!!
We started out with newborn orange edge GMDs and some Real Nappies covers from day one and I really like them. Then last week I broke out our craigslisted stash of Thirsties pocket dipes. While it's easier to put on the pocket dipe, I really don't like stuffing them. I'm actually considering reselling them and doing covers and prefolds forever. But as I type this I'm thinking I should just use the pockets AS covers and stick prefolds inside!?!! Awesome as I have 27 covers then!
I can't just not stuff the pocket, right? The insert is microfiber and hemp. I think I've read microfiber shouldn't be on baby's skin, right? So maybe ill just get a few more dozen prefolds as she grows bigger? At least until she doesn't fit the size one Thirsties.

I don't have any pocket diapers so I can't weigh in on that but I'm loving my gmd pre folds! We're also in the orange NB size.

I had pockets for my last two, and I didn't use the microfiber inserts. I used prefolds to stuff. I have a friend who used hers as covers instead of stuffing them- we had all pitched in and bought her a full set. We could have bought her a lot of baby stuff if we had bought straight covers instead of stuffers.

I would sell those puppies and get some rockin covers that you like. Those things are pricey! Then use the remaining money for the next sizes up. Or some new clothes.

we're using origami-folded flats too!  with little rubber pull-on pants that are just too cute.

We're feeling the prefold love over here, too. I have a dozen or so t-shirt fitteds that I made, and while they work great and look adorable, neither my husband nor I like snapping them! He is totally in favor of all prefolds when it's time to go to the next size up.

Clover's in newborn size that someone gave us, but I'm thinking only for a few more weeks. Probably will buy GMD mediums next?

I finally started using the wool covers I made (some sewn, some knitted) and I am in LOVE. They really do work, ha! Curly Purly is the best knitting pattern of the few I tried. Gotta make more of those. Though I probably will try to have some PUL covers, too. We're definitely fans of aplix over snaps here. We've got hand-me-down Thirsties x-smalls that we like fine, but I may try something else on the next size up -- suggestions?

I have a few flats but have not been brave enough to try them yet. Maybe I will after hearing the flats love from y'all!

And Chipi, I would TOTALLY sell those pockets and use the $ to get yourself a variety of covers of different brands and styles and stuff. I have one pocket someone gave me that I'm using as a cover, and I don't like how it gets wet. I think I would go nuts if I only had covers like that :-/

We're doing prefolds and covers, and love them. Once we got the right size that is! We had newborn bummis covers, but they only go up to 9lbs, so Elliott was a bit too big. Thankfully, we had another brand that goes up to 11lbs. I ordered some Rearz prefolds from well.ca and like them better than the bummis ones. We have a bunch of pocket diapers someone gave us, but they are waaayy too big right now, but the inserts are great for night time.

Today I got a box of hand me downs from a family member that had 5 Thirsties covers in it! Yeah! Going to buy a few more prefolds this week and then I'll be selling all of my pockets! Yay!
We love our prefolds! Loooove. We use bummis covers or wool but I'm Lusting over thirsties so we may try some of them too!

Once he gets bigger and needs snaps, I'm thinking about getting Kawaii covers, anybody use them?
