thank you for sharing and offering advice! I've tried a couple of things so far: 1) a doubled-up origami fold with a Bum Genius insert that I borrowed from a friend - worked great, no leaks, and the microfiber did wick moisture away. but because of the way the diaper is folded, the part that touches his butt and waist was still wet. so last night, I took Rainbow Nurse's suggestion and added a microfiber towel that we have around here. so... 2) a doubled-up origami fold with a microfiber towel laid across the whole thing (to cover all the parts that would touch his skin), and the rubber pants. worked great; he had it on from 9 to 6:30 or so, and no leaks! his skin was pretty dry when he woke up, and the diaper was fairly wet, but not absurdly so. I really think he saves most of his pee for the early morning, because the (single) diaper I took off him at 9:30 was heavy!
at any rate, I think I'm going to get some more microfiber towels since it seemed to work so well last night! I did like the little insert, but I know I'm not up for following the laundering instructions to keep them working right. that's why I got flats in the first place - just wash them with everything else with a normal amount of detergent, dry 'em in a minute inside or out on the line, and they're good as new. in case anyone's curious about our routine, we put the diapers in a bucket of water when we take them off, and then once a day we empty the bucket in the utility sink, rinse any poop off the diapers, wring them out, and put them right into the washer. they hang out there for a day, and we throw in our clothes or whatever other laundry we have and do the wash every other day. it doesn't have time to get stinky, and the diapers get perfectly clean! then like I said, I dry in the machine or on the line, and either seems to be as good as the other, though the sun really does bleach away the poop stains.
