I've got three amazing kids--a 16yo daughter, a 12yo son, and a 9yo daughter. The H told me Monday night that he filed for divorce. Last night (Tuesday), he sat our 12yo and 9yo down and told them that he is divorcing me. The 16yo is coming back from a month-long trip to Europe tomorrow (Thursday) and I am presuming he will tell her that evening. Mind you, I was there when he told our younger kids but he had to do the telling because he is the initiator.
The kids weren't as upset as I thought they would be. The 9yo cried a bit and then asked some questions as to why. He just gave her the "people grow apart" spiel. The 12you was very stoic during the conversation and then asked about custody because a friend was just asked to decide which parent he wants to live with.
I want to make this transition as easy for them as I can. Any suggestions?
