Toddler super attached to dirty diapers

Thread Starter

DS is almost three and has been absolutely devastated that he needs to take off his wet diapers in the morning.  And these dipes are super duper wet, sometimes even overflowing with pee.  he gets hysterical...but not usually until i've started taking the diaper off, like he decided he wasn't actually ready, even though I talk through whats happening and he lets me undo the first flap. after the first flap is off, he goes into melt down mode - why??? I know some things are weird when a new baby comes, but is this normal? could he be projecting some issue onto this? FWIW, it's typically only the first (and wettest) diaper of the day.  Many times he's like a typical toddler and is too busy to *want* a change, but this is different. Ideas on how to help with this?

Definitely sounds like a case of new baby regression to me.

Hmm that's tough! Is there any way HE could take them off himself or help you take them off? That may give the appearance of control and help a bit. Maybe try a little delay, like singing a song first or reading a quick story. Maybe he's still drowsy and needs a little time to get collected. I wish I had more for you. That sounds hard; starting each day with a tantrum.
