My first appointment will be Oct. 9, but I had a phone consultation with a midwife about a few questions. She suggested ultrasound around 8 weeks to help calm my fears of embryonic demise (which happened in my last pregnancy) without looking too early when it might be misdiagnosed. That sounded like a good idea to me, so I made the appointment for Sept. 24. Assuming that goes well, my family is going to birth center orientation Oct. 1. (My son was born in a hospital with a different midwife who's no longer in town. I am now going to a freestanding birth center.)
I had a very bad experience with nuchal translucency testing with my son: He was not in the right position, so the tech jabbed and shook me and hollered about how he was "bad"! She wouldn't let me see the screen at all. She acted like it was my fault she couldn't get a good view. So it was basically worthless. Meanwhile, my friend who was pregnant at the same time was told her baby might have Down's, so she worried about it the whole rest of her pregnancy, but he turned out fine.
I also had a bad experience with the fasting glucose tolerance test, so I'm hoping to avoid that this time unless there is some sign of a problem.
