Birth bead exchange - Page 3

Does anyone else want to volunteer to host the bead exchange? I'll do both if no one volunteers, just to be clear.

And to clarify... If I did the gift exchange, it would be under a totally different thread @heldt123. I figured I would ask how the bead mamas felt about it since I'd already committed to doing this one, and I know some mamas will want one, not the other. But I want to have both! Just not sure I can manage both. And I have worked out a foolproof way to keep gift buying to one per person @Tinapa, don't worry, it wouldn't be exchanging 20 gifts, lol. I'm still proof-reading my post for the gift exchange start up thread to make sure its really clear how it works.

I, too, am only interested in the bead exchange.

Just beads for me :)

beads for me, too.  although I'm looking at how big this group is, and I'm wondering, do we buy beads for 30 or so women?  or is this something where maybe we divide up, or scale it back somehow?  I have never done one of these, but it seems like that's a lot of beads to buy, and send, and get back (and a heck of a lot of work for whoever has to redistribute them!  maybe I just don't understand how it works?

I'm interested in both

@manysplinters, there are about 22 women signed up now, although 30 is my guesstimate final number as well given how the group is growing.    Lots of people are still interested in the bead exchange but no one else has yet volunteered to help redistribute them.  We'd need another two volunteers to get it down to around 7 mamas per group, if everyone likes that idea.  The postage costs will likely be lower, but with this many mamas, I am editing the original post to reflect that 1) return postage is likely to run about $4 in the US, without tracking, and is less if you use paypal, and 2) we are looking for another volunteer leader if anyone wants to save themselves all postage costs.

I like the idea of both but a gift exchange would be more fun for me.  I've been making all kinds of baby things lately.  And, the gift exchange I have in mind would be run like a chain, so every week we'd get to ooh and ahh over a different baby item.  More ongoing participation, as it were. ;)  I'm hoping to get it edited and up by next weekend.

@manysplinters The way I think it is working--no one really explained it to me--is we go out and buy the same bead for every woman. So if 30 people sign up, we buy 30 of the same bead. We send it to designated host, host receives x amount of same bead from other mamas, and then creates a necklace/bracelet with a bead from each mama.

If we have a lot of people participating, it could be simplified by just separating the beads into bags for each participant, and letting the participants do the work of threading them. That also lets each participant put it in the form that works best for them.

exactly.  7 beads versus 30 isn't really a big price difference unless you are paying $1 per bead, many beads come in strings of 15 or 25 so you are buying a few more, but I like the idea of so many different beads myself.  Just kinda feeling out how people are feeling about this before I jump into another exchange, lol.

Yes! I like this idea.

It sounds good to me - I just wanted to understand :shy

I can definitely string my own beads!

Beads only for me please!

If you go to a craft store you can find charms and beads for fairly cheap. I think I'm going to get charms for necklaces which are a little more expensive but would be kind of cute ya know?

Cute idea @TinaPa !  I am going to use teething rings, also a little more but will be fun.  If someone else or two picks a wooden or silicone bead, I can unstring the couple teething worthy beads afterwards, get more wear out of it and let baby enjoy it too :)

Oh and for the mamas interested in both exchanges, an update: the gift exchange did not work.  No one signed up on the actual exchange page, lol.  beads it is!

Is it still open to join the bead exchange? I live in Costa Rica and can send the beads from here and then have the beads sent to my family back in the US and they can bring me the beads on one of there many trip down here. I live in a tiny valley and I am not close to many of the women here and would like to feel connected to other mommas-to-be.

:) :) sign up is still open until after new years.  I plan to close it as of 2014.  International mamas are totally welcome, please add yourself to the google doc or comment with your country of mailing origin.  I will post again and tag (whatever they call it again) everyone who is on the list after new year's with detailed directions and a final total count of beads.
