Tell me about your physical recovery from csection?

Please tell me about your physical recovery from Csection.

Im day 10 and no longer feel dizzy.

I actually had a great recovery. After about 2 weeks I was walking pretty painless. Best to you!

The physical recovery was really easy. I was moving around with no pain in less than 2 weeks and I never actually even filled the scripts for pain meds.

My recovery was pretty easy.  I had some soreness and this weird pain in a point just above my hip bone and right under my collarbone?  Or in my shoulder?  It was SO WEIRD (and apparently quite common).  That's what I remember most.  I got steadily better, with some stiffness and soreness, for about six weeks and then I was doing pretty well.  I couldn't make any sudden movements or lift heavy things and the first time I tried to clear my throat (just after surgery) was a nasty shock (OUCH, who knew how many muscles you move clearing your throat!).  I remember trying to find a balance between doing too much and not doing enough.  You want to get up and moving, but you don't want to hurt yourself. 

 

I remember thinking it was pretty easy and not nearly as bad as I expected.

 

Oh, there was a gas issue!  That was terrible. It was by far (FAR) the worst part of my whole recovery and it came about a week after I had my section. When they say watch what you eat and don't drink carbonated beverages, LISTEN TO THEM.

 

There was some lingering numbness for a while.  I would get a desperately itchy patch, and then the feeling would come back in that area.  It took several months to work through that.  Maddening, but not painful.

 

Have your really been dizzy?  That seems unusual.

I did not know that.  I did not know gas could actually be anything beyond a little, hum, that's uncomfortable kind of feeling so imagine my surprise post C section when I decided one tiny bubbly drink (I can't even remember what, but I have a firmly established bubbly water addiction) because what could it possibly hurt!  ;-)

Recovery started out quickly-- I was walking to the shower the morning after surgery.  Digestion rumbled to life quickly.

 

But the next stage was incredibly and painfully slow (painful in a literal sense).  I would get so tired walking around the house with baby, I would start moving in circles until finally I called dh for help.  5 weeks after, I pushed the stroller down the block (from 113th to 115th, but one long block) and I was a little worried about getting back.  It was painful, yes, but I felt like my muscles just seized up entirely, not that they would move but with pain.  It was all so incredibly frustrating, especially since dd1 was such a high needs baby and desperately needed carrying and movement.  At about 2 months I felt like I could walk around normally enough, and started doing morning walks with my daughter, no hills.  I also had swelling in my ankles that took a couple weeks to normalize.  It was strange and a bit unsettling to look down and see such fat ankles with tiny little feet sticking out the bottom!

I was up walking within 6 hours of delivery (she was born at midnight so I got moving when I woke up the next morning) and was doing the stairs in my house a few times a day three days later when I was discharged from the hospital.

Thank you TCMoulton! I'm not sure yet if I will need a c-section but am slowly starting to investigate just in case (I'm only due in April).

I was doing stairs pretty soon post-c/s (definitely by the time I was out of the hospital), but if I could set up the perfect post-section recovery space for new moms, it would have no stairs in it.  There would be a a bed, a comfy chair, a bassinet for the baby (we got a lot of mileage out of our Pack n Play at that point, because the bassinet and changing table attachments meant I never needed to bend over), a bathroom, a fridge and a microwave, and a nice backyard with a lounge chair, all within about 15 feet.  There would not be a kitchen, because someone should be cooking for you.  Someone should also be cleaning.

 

Some people bounce back really fast, and some people take longer.  A lot of people wind up someplace in the middle, thinking that they're more recovered then they are, overdoing it, and then hurting a ton.  Go easy on yourself for a few weeks.  Experiment carefully when starting to exercise.

This is so helpful, MeepyCat! We live in a 2 story house with the bedrooms and full bath upstairs. Perhaps I'd just set up camp in the living room on the couch and maybe just skip the shower until I can get up and down the stairs OK.
