Our Dog is in Labor!

About a month and a half ago we rescued a young German Shepherd dog, who we call Lady. She was abandoned on a nearby horse ranch by a seasonal worker. We didn't realize until we'd had her a week or so that she was pregnant. She's an amazing dog and we are so happy to have her in our family. We plan on getting her spayed as soon as possible - breeding any animal is something I would never consider (well, maybe our chickens). We foster kittens for a shelter, etc. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Anyway, Lady's water broke this morning at 11:14! She is now in a little den under the table, resting. She doesn't show any signs of straining or distress right now. From my reading it can take up to two hours before she will deliver (although 30 mins is more typical.) Anyway, I just wanted to share our excitement! I will update with pictures and possibly video later. Any advice you would like to give is very welcome too. Of course we have a vet on call and have done lots of research :)

Anyone who wants to send good thoughts and wishes to Lady, we would love that.

(And just to reiterate - we did not breed Lady. She came to us already pregnant. :))

Ooh, best wishes, I would love to see the photos!

When I was a kid, our cat had babies twice, and it seemed like the best thing we could do for her was to leave her alone, but I don't know if it's the same for dogs.

Puppy number two was born breech

Thanks for the comments! It has been quite a day. Puppy number three was born about 40 mins ago and they are all resting. Not sure if there will be more. I am updating from my phone, but will type up the birth story, as it were, later.

They are going really well! Four puppies were born and they are three and a half weeks old now. Two are going to my friends who are stay at home moms and have another dog, so not only am I positive they will be happy and taken care of, but I will get updates on them! We are keeping one and the other is going to a friend of DH, who will be able to bring the puppy to work with him. I am so thankful for that. We ended up with three boys and a girl.

Yes! As soon as possible. And the baby we're keeping will be neutered, too.

So adorable!  Any guesses about what kind of dog their dad is?

Those are very adorable puppies.  I am glad you were able to find happy homes for all of them.

The vet and I both suspect some kind of Mastiff. They're HUGE!
