I am a FLUgitive!

Thread Starter

At least according to Sanofi Pasteur.

Quote:

To help encourage more Americans to get their annual flu shot, Sanofi Pasteur announced today the launch of a national campaign to round up The FLUgitives™ –people who haven't yet been vaccinated against the flu this season.

And they are expecting me to turn myself and my fellow FLUgitives in!

Quote:

Starting today, #FLUgitives are encouraged to come out of hiding, round up other #FLUgitives and turn themselves in to their healthcare provider to learn about the seriousness of influenza and their available vaccine options.

Perhaps they are trying to be cute. I can see the humor in the campaign, but still, it's kind of creepy. What other industries/businesses would love for people and society to think that only "bad guys" don't buy their products?

When I clicked on the link to read the article, it said this:

"Campaign harnesses positive peer influence" At first I thought it said "Campaign harasses" (and I didn't think there was anything strange about that!

Wow!  That campaign is just plain tasteless!  Anybody who has studied history should be spotting several disturbing parallels!  (and I'm not referring to any particular historical event, this sort of campaign has been used in many places at many times for nasty reasons)  They might be trying to be cute, but they fail miserably.

Excellent title, Mizram.

Yes, I am a flugitive.

I do not know the stats on most flugivitves.  Are flugitives primarily made up of people who cannot be bothered to get the flu shot, or those who are opposed to it?  I can see
"can't be bothered" flugitives influencing other "can't be bothereds" to jump on the bandwagon with them…I cannot see the opposers influencing anyone to get a shot (indeed, it might go the other way).

How long before the advertisements start on flummageddon start?

ohhh…fun with flu words!  i was looking for a fun post :bouncy

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2013/01/12/why-64-8-percent-of-americans-didnt-get-a-flu-shot/

To me it seems like a decent number of Americans are opposed to flu shots, as opposed ot just not bothering.

To me it seem like the goal of getting flugitives to influence other flugitives might not work, as flugitives are opposed to the flu shot.  Who knows, though.

___________

and now, as I am bored:

flugitive

flumageddon

flupocalypse

flu-q

fluvivor

fludemic

Kill-joy

:duck

You are right, though.

The word flugitive also implies those who do not get the flu shot are criminals.  Ick.

Ugh it's just tasteless and somewhat dangerous on so many levels.

I'm not worried about it's being tasteless.

I think it's downright dangerous.

As pointed out upthread, it's deliberately implying that those who argue against flu shots are criminals.  And it pushes a tattle-tale, rat-out-the-neighbors-in-return-for-acceptance-in-the-Club mentality.

Worst of all, it COMPLETELY ignores the real facts about the flu shot:  there is no evidence that giving it to health care workers prevents transmission, there is no evidence that getting it protects patients of health care workers, and the studies show no efficacy in pediatric and geriatric groups--the two target populations.

And not a single mention of the possibility of an adverse reaction.  When did it become legal for drug companies to advertise drugs WITHOUT that mention?  Commercials have it in ridiculously-sped-up voiceover at the very end; magazine advertisements have it in tiny, tiny print.  But vaccines?  No mention of risks anywhere in the media!  How can that be legal?  IT'S AN INVASIVE PROCEDURE.

Scary!

Sanofi coined a term for people who don't get flu shots - flugitives. Kathy you nailed it with the criminals http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugitive

But that is not even bad enough. They also subcategorized these flugitives into:

  • The Scaredy Cat, whose anxiety about everything delays him getting a vaccine he knows he needs
  • The Turbo Mom, whose hectic schedule leaves little time for focusing on her own health
  • The Latest and Greatest Guy, who wants the newest version of everything, but has yet to learn about the latest in vaccine-delivery technology
  • The Fitness Fanatic, who puts his workout before anything else – including his health.

This is so sick! What sick minds came up with such a campaign labeling? And yes it brings negative feelings up about recent events in world history.

This makes no sense at ALL......wouldn't a fitness fanatic be the person most focused on health?!?

Some of my least favorites quotes:

"#FLUgitives can turn themselves or others in by visiting the campaign Facebook page at FLUgitives.com There, they can access and share humorous and informational videos and e-cards to encourage other #FLUgitives to get their yearly flu vaccination. They can also see just how bad they and their friends could look if they get the flu by using the FLUify™ photo app at FLUgitives.com/fluify.

About Influenza

Influenza is a serious respiratory illness that is easily spread and can lead to severe complications, even death. Each year in the U.S., 1 in 5 people, or up to 20 percent of the population gets the flu "

What do they mean - turn others in????  I would be incredibly unamused if it was pasted on facebook that I was flu-vax free. I did try to go to the flugitives site to see what exactly they meant, but  failed (anyone have any luck?)

1/5 people do not get the flu strain that the vaccines might protect against - very generous stats would put that at 5% or 1/20.  That they would deliberately misinform is galling (and people wonder why some of us have trust issues).

I did a little digging - CDC claim 5-20% of people get the flu every year.  Of course Sanofi is using the higher end with its "20%" gambit. :eyesroll    It is also possible they are including all "flu -like " illnesses in their 20% figure, but the vaccine does not work on "flu-like illnesses"

Cochrane reviews put the chance of getting the flu if unvaccinated and the flu is highly circulating at 4%.

This is FLUcking ridiculous!

LMAO

I'd be LMAO, too--except it is far too reminiscent of other periods in history where the propaganda of the day urged citizens to "turn others in" for their choices.

Anyone else getting the flumist ads on here now? Grr...

And this campaign goes perfectly with my mommy wars thread. More social bullying. More threatening.

Meh, I'm not taking it too seriously. It's an ad campaign and no one is getting arrested. I think it's kinda funny. Of course it's manipulative but all campaigns are like that.

I hate twitter and all that damn hashtagging nonsense :irked .  But if they wish to label me, then yes, I am a FLUgitive and will be til the day I die! They are trying to use what's trendy and manipulate people thinking we are all too stupid to notice.  Hooray for being FLUdicated and knowing better!

Does anyone remember the campaign from last year or the year before about 'the usual suspects'??? It was done by one of the bigger companies & was about how to talk to different folks about Vaxes, but it featured mug shots & everything. I was driving myself crazy last night trying to find it.
Reminds me of the scene in The Fugitive where Harrison Ford's character says to Tommy Lee Jone's character "I didn't do it" and Tommy Lee just shrugs and says, "I don't care!" It's all about the numbers ($$$) and nothing else!

I am glad I never ever got a flu vax in my entire life and never will. The year my DH and my BiL got one they also came down with a bad flu. So no thanks
