My DS (age 13) is diagnosed with ASD among other things. He goes to Linda Mood-bell (LMB) for tutoring in reading. Today a new female student started tutoring. We got a call from the director that the girl's parent had complained about DS being "weird". Apparently DS stared at this girl (from what I gathered she is a year or two younger than him) for some time and eventually asked the girl if he could touch her. While I can see how this might come across as creepy, I was thrilled that DS ASKED if he could touch her, score one for respecting personal space! I don't know for sure, because I haven't had a chance to talk to DS, but I suspect he probably liked what she was wearing and wanted to feel the texture of it. Of course the girl has no idea what DS is like so she complained to her parents who in turn complained to the director. The director said that he assured the parents that DS is in no way a threat and that he is just "weird" like that sometimes. LMB isn't very good at understanding ASD kids but they sure as hell are good at teaching them to read. Anyway the director asked us to talk to DS about not being so "weird". That annoys the crap out of me. But right now I am just thrilled that DS ASKED the girl if he could touch her. He asked!
