Deli foods?

So, I know we aren't supposed to eat deli meat while pregnant due to listeriosis (unless heated up to steaming), but that probably includes all high protein deli foods, huh? Like cheese, potato salad with eggs in it, chicken salad, etc? Dammit. I eat much better when I don't have to prepare it, but I don't want to always be eating fast food or in restaurants...

theoretically, yes.  But I swear people are going to look back on our generation and wonder that any of the pregnant women survived they are prohibited from so much normal stuff.  I had deli meat, coffee, sushi, and wine while pregnant with my last baby (for the record I absolutely did not think I was pregnant at the time of the wine part, that was early on, but the rest I wasn't aware of until 8 mo, lol).  She's good. A sub sandwhich would have been more healthy than what I ate for dinner today, so if you want it, I'd go for it once a week.  Would you like other ideas for lunches?  I can share, I make DH food alot :) and I use the word "make" lightly.

With my first child, 12 years ago, I did not know about the 'no deli food' rule. I ate at a sub shop 2-3x/week my entire pregnancy bc it was the 'healthiest' food near my job. Baby girl will be 12 in Feb smile.gif I freaked out and ate no deli food with the next six pregnancies (including 2 m/c). Now I'm back to enjoying ham sandwiches bc it's one of the few things I can stomach at the moment. I do steam the heck out of the meat in the micro though.

There was a recent listeria alert in potato salad: http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2013/09/spartan-fresh-potato-salad-recalled-for-listeria-risk/#.Uks864ashzs So please don't eat that one.

Other than that, I don't know. I avoid deli food in general but I know how tiring it is to have to avoid such huge food groups. :(

Exactly!  There are whole categoiries of food we are supposed to not eat from.  Theoretically.  But I try to just avoid the more egregious ones (uncooked alcohol, large coffee amounts, raw sushi. and things that are questionable of date or sliminess).   I still have to eat!

I pretty much ignore it. I can avoid lunch meat all day and have it pop up in a canteloupe instead (that was the cause of the biggest recent outbreak. I don't see them suggesting against eating uncooked produce). Or in some totally new source that hasn't been linked to previous outbreaks. It isn't like alcohol, where there's a proven dose-related association. It just depends on if you happen to get a bad batch or not, and infection is really quite rare.
