non toxic, effective bug spays?

Does anyone know of something to keep the bugs off little ones? MY DD is 16 months old and we are already dealing with bites this season. She is miserable. I don't want to use deet but I feel like it is the only thing that works. I have very sensitive skin and unfortunately she seems to have it also. The bites she has now have blossomed into HUGE whelts.

Thanks

Amy

there are a bunch of different all natural bug sprays...burts bees has some..we use some Badger's something or other that comes in a tin and you rubu it on. Smells like patchouli...you can also use a little bit of essential oil of eucalyptus or basil in lotion... (I think lavendar works too)...the point is to cover up the body smell...also I read somewhere that Dr Bronners peppermint liquid soap mixed with water works really well too...That's what I used last summer when dd was 6 months old...neither one of us got any bites (I think it worked better than the deet stuff my husband used)

My brother and his family have spent the past few years living in equatorial Africa, and they are plagued with Malaria-carrying mosquitoes. He swears the only thing that works is Burt's Bees. They buy it by the case.

It probably depends on your bugs. We've tried lots of "natural" repellents and mixed oils to try to develop our own, and none of them worked more than marginally for what we need them most- blackflies and mosquitoes. Our solution was to cover up, with lightweight clothing and bug hats. They don't make little-kid bug hats to my knowledge, so I made my own by sewing (or you could just pin) screening around a baseball-style cap for my son. I was afraid he'd throw fits over it, but he was more rational than expected at 18 months when we told him it was really the only option if he wanted to go outside. (And the bugs up there really were so horrible they drove him crazy without it.)

Bite Blocker from http://www.homs.com/ -

Whenever anyone asks this question, I rave about this stuff - it is awesome. My dh is a forest ecologist and he takes our ds out into thick woods all the time. While I love Burt's Bees products (which, by the way you can order directly from their web site) Bite Blocker blows it out of the water when it comes to bugs - all without any nasty stuff!

Burt's Bees

Burt's Bees insect repellant works great! You can get it for $4.88 each at http://www.babes-in-paradise.com/BurtsBees.htm.

I like bite blocker...a year of two ago someone like the wall street journal or comsumer report reviewed conventional and natural repellent...and this was the only effective natural repellent...I tried it and I think it works a lot better than Burts Bees, which I also own.

this one works well too... we're in a tropical climate. needs reapplication every few hours

Nevermind! I just realized you can buy it on their site!

my dd is only 4 months. does annyone know about safety of burts bees etc for her? I could certainly try the dr bronner remedy.

I have a related question--until we find a product that works for us, does anyone know of something good for relieving itch from bites?

Personally, I've found that Natrapel lasts a lot longer than Burt's Bees. The Burt's Bees works great, but only for about an hour after you apply it.
