In a few weeks, my son (4th grade) is taking the Explore as part of Belin Blanks talent search. What have been other kids' experience? I want to do my very best to help my son relax. On the one hand, I don't want him to study because we aren't trying to prove anything, I just want an honest assessment of what he knows. On the other hand, I thought I should have him do the practice test so he is familiar with the format. I am afraid he will get anxious and reducing some of the scary unknowns will ease his mind.
I also want to give him a pep talk that this isn't a competition. For us, anyway. I want to know what he can do with no judgement attached. It's like measuring his height or the fundamental frequency of his voice. He shouldn't expect to get most questions correct and he might not even finish Anyone have a conversation like this with your kids before testing?
I think my son has been well taken care of by the school district but I have a complete lack of instinct on how gifted he really is. At first, I thought he was borderline gifted but his gifted teacher last year made it very clear that he is more than that. He is happy but he is rarely challenged and is not learning the skills associated with struggle and failure. We are using the Explore for information for future directions. The school is supportive and familiar with the Explore.
