mama's health while nursing

Hey all. Anyone else have immune issues when nursing, like getting sick all the time? The sickest I've ever been was when DS2 was nursing (during those two winter seasons I was sick with something new every week, no exaggeration). And I seem to be going in that direction currently too, with nursling #3. In the past 10 days I've had three separate stomach bugs. And the week before that was a bad cold. I'm thinking this is linked to lack of sleep and low vitamin D. I've been trying to up my D through vitamins and diet, but when it was last checked when I was pregnant it was a 13 (very, very low).

For obvious reasons, getting sick all the time just can't happen. And it's making me depressed. Anyone else have this issue? Coping strategies?

I'm sorry you are going through this mama. Both times my nursing relationships were frought with sickness and physical aliments. I am always one to get sick quite often. If it's going around I probably have it. But with large doses of Vit D (I usually take 3000-5000IUI a day) I seem to be holding steady on the virus train. In fact my DD1 came home from school with something and I *didn't* get it!

I had some other undiagnosed autoimmune diseases I was dealing with while nursing and it was no fun at all. For a large part of DD2's nursing we had to be laying down in bed for it to even happen. My arms would go numb just holding her. I don't know of many coping strategies other then my mantra that while the kids are small to only focus on getting ONE thing a day done. That could be a shower or it could be the dishes. And if you have the energy to do more then go for it. But if you don't? Hey that one thing was good enough. And get enough sleep mama!

Thanks mama! It helps to know I'm not alone in this as all of my IRL nursing mama friends seem to not be affected this way. Not that I would wish this on them, or you! One thing that works magic is Sambucol elderberry syrup. I chugged a bottle of it daily last winter when I was 39/40 weeks pregnant and both older kids came down with that dreaded weeklong influenza. I didn't get it! But I was also out a ton of money as it's $15/pop. If I was rich I'd drink it everyday. Until then, lots of vit D for this lady and I sleep when I can.
