Stayed home and forced the children to clean their rooms, so no spending today :mischief Made banana bread for breakfast with bananas we ended up bringing home from the hotel breakfast buffet last week, and ate from the pantry and freezer the rest of the day.

Last night we ended up eating out (about $21), unplanned.
Today we ate at home all day and
I did a planned grocery run at Aldi, $17, and filled up gas tank, $35. We also went to a state park for free for Veteran's Day, yay! $1 donation.

I finally started using Mint again and realized I've been spending way more than I thought on groceries -- about $860 last month, YIKES! That does include pull-ups, toiletries, and a couple bulk purchases (like Costco bulk, not 25-lb bags of grain or anything). We seriously can't afford to be spending that much.

I neglected to pack some lunch for after the play we saw today, so we ended up spending around $20 for lunch. I also paid my library fine/movie rental fee ($4), bought cheese at BJ's, which should last us at least a week or so ($21), and spent $105 finishing off two micro loans on Kiva.com (only $55 out of pocket though, the other $50 was from repayments from previous loans). I still need to plan better around food, which is a constant stumbling point for me. We eat breakfast later than normal, so mid-day outings usually cross over our lunchtime, and if we're going to be out of the house, I'm lost. I need to plan our days better so I'm not caught unaware so often!

Spent a glorious morning at the DMA (slight sarcasm) and got our van registered in our new state.  I underestimated the cost and was a bit shocked to write a check for $194.00.  I'll need to spend a few bucks tomorrow to mail the old plates back.

The budget is still holding though, so no complaints.  The grocery budget is solid and we are eating good meals, so my new, lower budget is certainly feasible.  Just kind of riding along right now.   I have more than half of my food budget left, money for another tank of gas, and about $200 of unbudgeted cash to cover any extras that pop up.

I managed to get through the whole day without spending anything other than the $20 on DD8's weekly class! That includes my having to take the kids to a library function, then over to my parents' so I could go to a meeting. I hadn't eaten dinner, and while I had a few bites of food at my parents' house to tide me over until I got home, I successfully resisted the urger to stop at every pizzeria, McD's, and Wendy's I passed on the way :bgbounce My parents fed the kids, and DH fed himself. Woohoo!

Spent $24 on Cici's pizza for dinner tonight because the the chicken I was thawing is still half frozen (and frankly, I've been craving pizza!). DH spent $39 on groceries, mostly for lunches for him at work, and eggs and milk. Not terrible, but not fabulous. At least I can say it was conscious decision to get dinner out rather than a function of my usual disorganization :blush

We are running out of groceries and I didn't plan well enough for lunches. Actually, I could have made myself an almond butter and jam sandwich to bring to work but I ran out of time in the AM. So both DH and I ended up paying for lunch out while at work today - I think we spent about $10-11 between us, which is not terrible.

We get paid tomorrow and...we didn't overdraft this week! Yay!

That's a sad marker of success but since losing my consulting/part-time gig in September we're still adjusting to the decrease in income.

Besides that, I feel good about sticking to a meal plan this week, making stuff like quiche and muffins from scratch, eating at home all day most days, and making yummy and filling dinners with only about $40 of groceries plus pantry stuff on hand!

Finally going to start a chart now that I'm in front of a computer instead of on phone:

11/07 - nono.gif Unbudgeted spending on lunch while at work

11/08 - thumb.gif No spend

11/09 thumb.gif  Groceries, $22

11/10 - nono.gif Dinner out, $21

11/11 - thumb.gif  Groceries, $17. Gas, $35. State park entrance donation, $1.

11/12 -  thumb.gif  $4.50 for Starbucks while at work but it was semi-budgeted, parking at work $3

11/13 - thumb.gif No spend

11/14 - nono.gif Un-budgeted spending - $11 for lunch out while at work

Dh filled the tank yesterday.  We could have gone a few more days, but he is so weird about the gas level dropping below 1/4 tank.  I guess it is his security blanket.

Where we live, it is a good idea to fill up at about 1/4 tank.  I also tend to fill up at one particular gas station, which *usually* has the lowest prices, just because I am conditioned to look at the gas gauge at particular point on the highway.  So, for me, it is a security blanket to do it at a particular point.  I've not run out of gas, but come very close when I followed a different protocol.  So, for us, gas needs to come when it comes, regardless of budget cycle.  We have some long distances between stations where I drive, and remote roads with few houses and zero cell service....

And this makes perfect sense.  You are smart to be careful.

We live in a small city of 50,000 and are 1 mile from a large gas station, so our needs are much different.  And I am a dork and like a tidy spreadsheet.  When he fills the tank early, I have to adjust the excel file a bit.   And yes, you may all point and laugh at me now.  Seriously, that is some uptight behavior.   :nut

15 :2whistle Snacks and eat out with girls (about $10--not bad).  Planned Christmas light spending.  Gas.

Made it 1/2way through the month on one tank of gas.  That's pretty good when everything is 20-30 miles away!  It means we were sticking close to home.  However, I don't expect this next half to be so frugal with driving.  Holidays coming, more gymnastics.  At least gas is a little cheaper this year, which is good considering I make less money per hour than I did in 1997, when it was still under $2/gal.  (DH hasn't had a raise since about then either!)

So far, no devilish spending this month.  Keep the girls out of the stores is the #1 priority (sorry, kids.)

Oh feel free to point and laugh.  It really has gotten a little out of control lately.  My dh is a patient, sweet man though and appreciates my love of spreadsheets.

I forgot to put in the $45 I spent last weekend for tickets for music this weekend.  On the positive side, I went out last night and didn't spend any extra money!  Gonna try not to spend tonight also, but I'll allow myself a drink if I decide I want one ;)  Today is a spending day--need groceries, some shipping supplies so I can mail out a book I sold on Amazon, and need to get gas.  All of this unplanned spending this month has put me in a tight spot for the rest of the month.  I'm hosting Thanksgiving and had put some money aside for that, but then took some out, so I'm hoping I still have enough.  I think if I am really intentional about how I plan the menu, I should be okay.  My birthday is in a few weeks and I will get some money for that, so I just need to hold out on any other unnecessary spending until then.
